Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Ending: Teddy’s Fate & Meredith’s Discovery

Grey’s Anatomy surely knows how to keep its audience hooked even after 19 seasons. With season 20 confirmed, the show ended its current season in May 2023, with the two-episode finale leaving viewers on a major cliffhanger. With three lives hanging in balance and several other careers, and a few relationships to be revealed, we have got a lot to wait for.

Simone left Trey at the altar and flew into Lucas’ arms, leading to a sigh of relief from me – I just love them. Their complicated dynamic jumbles up more when the latter doesn’t know if she should hate him for going against Maxine’s wishes or love him for saving her favorite person.

Jo and Link finally reveal their feelings of love to one another, and even Mika and Taryn get together. Meredith and Nick reunite, and after a jealous misunderstanding, kiss and make up while Owen and Maggie end up not divorcing, hoping they can make long-distance work. I see a happy ending for all these couples –though not for the last one; I mean, when has it ever worked?

But let’s come to the cliffhangers. Yes, I’m talking about Teddy’s deadly “toothache,” Sam and Maxine’s fate, the possible storm coming the residents’ way, and Meredith’s new Alzheimer’s discovery.

What’s Going on with Teddy?

Celebrating a win with Blue, Maxine starts losing air, and in a desperate attempt to save her, Blue operates on her, doing exactly what she’d asked him not to do. Later, Jules and Yasuda calm her down as she comes to terms with her condition, but she’s still in the red. Could Max be the first casualty of season 20?

Racing her for that title are Teddy and Sam! Teddy gathers the residents for the last surgery on Sam, but amid the process, she falls to the ground, unconscious and seemingly without a pulse. Meanwhile, Sam’s dangerous blood loss gives into a code blue as the new doctors try to see what’s wrong with the attending doctor and how to save their charming patient.

We don’t know what Teddy’s mystery illness is, and above that, if she’ll even survive. However, the season 20 cast list does have Kim Raver’s name on it, so I’m hoping Grey’s Anatomy isn’t upping the stakes by killing off a long-time character.

As for Sam, he’s been playing a losing game since he came into Grey Sloan, but for the sake of our residents (and Link), I hope he does make it. Because if he bites it, our new crop of residents might face severe punishment for operating on such a high-risk patient without an attending doctor present.

Most of our Grey Sloan doctors had flown to Boston for the Catherine Fox Awards. After some life-threatening turbulence, Richard might have ended his sobriety, but I have bigger plots to address. As it is, he could easily have either drank the martini he ordered or sent it back – we’ll know when the show returns.

Before Meredith presents the award of the night to Bailey, she comes clean to her ex-colleagues that she has made a shocking discovery for Alzheimer. Her theory could possibly render all previous research on the subject, including Derek’s life’s work, moot and turn the medical community upside down.

Her friends advise her to keep it under wraps till she has more conclusive results, but she ends up blurting them to a few donors. This plot will definitely be one of the major storylines in season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy.

We don’t have any news on when season 20 will arrive but don’t expect it before late 2024 or early 2025. What did you think of the season 19 finale? Let us know in the comments!
