With a runtime of more than two and a half minutes, the trailer provides a glimpse into the plot of the film. In the movie, Maniscalco, who plays himself, is convinced by his fiancée to take his traditional immigrant father, Salvo on an extravagant weekend trip with her wealthy and peculiar family. This leads to a clash of cultures and some unforeseen family connections.
About My Father features an impressive cast led by Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro as father and son, respectively. Joining them are Kim Cattrall, Brett Dier, Anders Holm, and David Rasche, portraying Sebastian’s future in-laws.
The movie is directed by Laura Terruso, who is known for directing Netflix’s Work It, Good Girls Get High, and Fits and Starts. Austen Earl co-wrote the script in collaboration with Maniscalco.
Despite being an eight-time Oscar nominee for his roles in acclaimed movies such as The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Irishman, De Niro has had a mixed history with comedies.
Meet the Parents, which had a similar premise as About My Father, was a huge box office hit and garnered critical acclaim that led to several sequels. However, De Niro has also appeared in some comedies in recent years, such as The War with Grandpa and Dirty Grandpa, that did not receive the same level of positive reception.
Whether About My Father will be successful or unsuccessful, it will only be determined when the movie hits theaters on May 26.
