After ‘Venom 2’, Sony Delays Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ by a Week

Following the lead of several post-COVID films, Tom Holland’s Uncharted has been delayed by one more week. Sony has been keen on delaying the theatrical release of its films ever since the start of the pandemic, considering it still doesn’t have a streaming service of its own. The movie is being pushed back one week to February 18, 2022, after being previously set for February 11.

However, the pandemic isn’t the only woe for this video game adaptation. The movie has been through a revolving door of directors, with the likes of David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight, forcing the makers to push the release date.

Ruben Fleischer, known for movies like Zombieland and Venom, is currently helming the film, which follows the adventures of young treasure hunter Nathan Drake (Tom Holland). The movie is based on the popular PlayStation video game franchise of the same name. The game, too, follows Drake as he travels the globe in search of mythical artifacts.

It may be noted that the peculiar delay of one week could be unrelated to production issues but instead to the status of theatre business following the pandemic. Earlier this week, Sony delayed the release of its Marvel movie Venom 2 by one week, in line with the trend set by Warner Bros’ Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat. The delays have been coming right after the rollout of vaccines across the country, letting more and more theatres reopen as restrictions are relaxed.

When the pandemic hit Hollywood, Sony delayed its entire 2020 slate into 2021 and shuffled the release date of a number of their films. Morbius, the other film spinning off of a classic Spider-Man villain, was moved from March 2021 to October 2021, and less than a day later, to January 2022.

Besides Tom Holland, Uncharted also stars Mark Wahlberg as Sully, a fellow treasure hunter and mentor to Drake, while Sophia Ali portrays Chloe Frazer, another fortune hunter and Drake’s love interest. The cast also includes actors Antonio Banderas and Tati Gabrielle.

The screenplay has been crafted by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Rafe Judkins and the film is being produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad.
