The appearance wasn’t voluntary—the paparazzi had been following him and his family while they were in their car, traveling. In an attempt to get them to stop, Baldwin and his wife got out to answer a few questions.

When asked about the incident, Baldwin states multiple times that he is not allowed to make statements about the same to the public while the investigation is active. However, he has divulged the fact that he has met Halyna Hutchins’ bereaved family.

As for Rust itself, Baldwin (who was also producer and co-developer of the film) quickly shuts down the possibility of production resuming, saying he “doubts it, sincerely.”

The film would have Baldwin as an outlaw trying to rescue his 13-year-old grandson, who is wrongfully convicted of an accidental murder.

Simultaneously he is being chased by a US Marshall and bounty hunter. It had Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Jensen Ackles, and Brady Noon as part of the cast.

Baldwin did elaborate on his views about gun treatment in film production, emphasizing that a huge number of Hollywood films use guns, and such tragic instances call for urgent change.

Baldwin said he is more than willing to support these changes but left the decision up to the professionals who know of better alternatives than having live guns on set.

Rust’s “professionals” are under scrutiny for not doing a proper gun/prop check. In particular, on-set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and assistant director Dave Halls are being investigated, both of whom have similar priors on other films.

However, no charges have been filed, and the investigation is yet awaiting its final verdict.

Still, Baldwin makes it a point to say that the crew was “well-oiled,” which simply deepens the pain of this tragedy. It is only hoped that this incident will bring up much-needed gun control on sets, and perhaps, outside as well.
