With Doom Patrol Season 3 being only days away, we’re treated to another teaser image of the catastrophic mess that is about to come: Brendan Fraser’s Robotman is seen chilling with Garguax in a sauna!

The alien conqueror is being played by Stephen Murphy.

In the comic books, Garguax doesn’t have the most cordial relationship with the Doom Patrol. But as reported in Entertainment Weekly, show-runner Jeremy Carver gives us a little more background to the character’s new involvement in the show:

He was quite the fearful presence back in the ’50s but since then he’s been living a very different existence. Will he continue to be loyal to an evil leader, or will he be loyal to himself? It’s not unlike the Doom Patrol questioning where they stand in the aftermath of their own tragedy.

It’s true, for while Season 1 dealt with the Doom Patrol facing their past and making peace with their present conditions, the progress was stumped by Chief’s betrayal in Season 2. The knowledge that the man who had redeemed their lives was, in fact, the sole engineer of all their miseries left the members with fresh wounds to tend to.

But Doom Patrol is nothing if not about learning to deal with life’s mess in a weird, psychedelic way. In the past, the members have often found personal resolutions by unwittingly helping out guest characters. I’m sure that this is where Garguax comes in as well.

Besides Garguax’s promo image, Doom Patrol has also released a bunch of Season 3 character posters:

Plot-wise, we’re still to learn the direction this season will take. Season 2’s biggest adversary was Dorothy’s no-so-imaginary friend, Candlemaker, who kidnapped her during the finale’s events.

Now that the trailer brings in new problems in the form of the Brotherhood of Evil, the Sisterhood of Dada, and a very confused, memory-wiped Madame Rouge, Candlemaker does not seem to be the Doom Patrol’s biggest concern.

This can be a little disappointing for some viewers (and even from a writing standpoint) since most of Season 2’s action was based on Candlemaker’s arrival. His build-up definitely needs an equally good ending.

Talking about more things that the Doom Patrol and we don’t know: Why did Madame Rouge travel from the future to the present? And, what world-shattering problem does she need help with? Her blank memory paired with her utter conviction is going to be an utter pleasure to unravel.

Doom Patrol’s journey through the looking glass once again begins on September 23 on HBO Max.
