Secret Invasion Trailer Breakdown and Easter Eggs

The Secret Invasion trailer is out, and straight off the bat, let me just say, ‘No one can be trusted!’ This is one theme ingrained in the trailer and in the minds of all the viewers who watched it.

Nobody knows which characters are Skrulls and which ones are the real ones.

Is Nick Fury, in the beginning, actually an imposter?

Is Olivia Colman playing a Skrull?

Who is Emilia Clarke playing in the show?

Who is Talos?

Well, you might have all these questions and more. So, without further ado, here’s a complete breakdown of the Secret Invasion trailer.

The Secret Invasion trailer showcases Nick Fury’s return to Earth after a long time. It depicts a battle between the super spy and the Skrulls, whom he had first met during the events of Captain Marvel.

1. What do the Skrulls want?

Skrull

This is the biggest question fans have been asking since the trailer dropped at the D23 conference. In the comics, the Skrulls are a civilization of villains who want to invade Earth and their homes. However, it might be more than that in the MCU show.

One of the shots shows a steel case being closed and picked by the DODC. Perhaps that case has the thing that Skrulls wants the most or it could be an item that acts as a means to the end.

2. Colonel James Rhoades and Armor Wars Connection

Kevin Feige, during the conference, announced that Secret Invasion would directly connect with the Armor Wars series. In the comics, this plotline has no connection with the Skrulls, so it is interesting to see the character in a significant role.

Fury asks him about his security detail and warns him of some sort of infiltration. In the comics, the Skrulls had begun their invasion by impersonating several members of the Avengers or people close to them. So, this could be a hint at that.

Besides this, we also see Everett Ross, who we last saw in the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer. So, maybe he’s facing a threat by the Skrulls or some other entity, too.

3. Emilia Clarke, Olivia Coleman, and Ben Mendelsohn

Emilia Clarke and Secret Invasion

We know that Ben Mendelsohn is playing Talos, but the creators have kept the roles of Emilia Clarke and Olivia Coleman well under the wraps. However, all these three characters seem to be super vigilant and have some idea about what’s coming.

In different scenes, we see them issuing warning statements to Nick Fury. While Talos asks Fury to be very careful from now on, Olivia’s character tells him that he’s not ready for the fight ahead. In another shot, Emilia is seen holding a gun and says that everything is corrupt.

Now, we might know more about this soon, but here are a few interesting details that will build further curiosity:

Talos first appeared in the post-credits scene of Far From Home. He’s seen impersonating Nick Fury, which led us to believe that he was a Skrull.

Whether he was following Fury’s orders or had some other connection with him, we’ll know soon. Also, if Nick Fury in Far From Home was actually Talos, how long has Nick Fury not been on Earth?

Olivia Coleman’s character is wearing a golden badge with two circles. This is quite similar to the logo of S.W.O.R.D. Now, guess what this acronym stands for.

Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division. This space-based counterpart of S.H.I.E.L.D. is responsible for intercepting and defusing extra-terrestrial threats to Earth.

Olivia Coleman could be playing its director, Abigail Brand. Brand is half-mutant and half-alien and has the superpower to generate burning energy with her hands. How these three characters connect is going to form a crucial part of this political spy-thriller.

4. Are Skrulls the main villain in Secret Invasion?

Skrulls

This part wasn’t in the trailer, but it confused me. Although the Skrulls are the bad guys in the comics, their character had been completely flipped in Captain Marvel. They were depicted to be the good guys.

If you remember the trailer and marketing campaign for that film, you’ll see that the Skrulls were portrayed as the ultimate villains for Carol Danvers. However, when the movie came out, we realized it was a complete diversion.

Could the Secret Invasion trailer be trying to do the same? If not, why have the Skrulls gone bad again? Is it that certain factions of that civilization are still bad, and only a few are good?

If you remember the movie, you’ll see that it ended with Captain Marvel going along with the Skrulls to find them a new home. We never got to know how that mission ended. Even Talos, at the end of Far From Home, said Danvers might not have completed the mission.

So, maybe a lot is going on that we don’t know. All these are important questions that the show will most likely answer.

5. Why is this Nick Fury’s battle? Why should he be alone?

Nick Fury

Nick Fury is one of the smartest human beings who knows his strengths and weaknesses. He knows he can’t fight and so has always taken the help of superheroes.

Remember the conversation between Maria Hill and Fury in The Avengers:

They’ll come back.’ ‘Are you sure?’ ‘Yes, because we’ll need them to.’

So, why is a man who has always assembled the superheroes to fight for him now fighting alone? Since he’s been off the planet for so long, a lot must have happened between him and the Skrulls. Maybe we just have to wait for the show.

These are all the Easter eggs from the Secret Invasion trailer. The series doesn’t have a release date yet, but it is slated to premiere in Spring 2023. Until then, all we can do is wait for more.
