D23 Expo 2022: All Marvel Announcements and Trailers

Disney’s D23 Expo kicked off on September 9, 2022, with new updates and announcements for the company’s various projects. Day 1 included exclusive footage revealed for the Star Wars Franchise, Percy Jackson’s upcoming original series, and more.

Day 2 featured a boatload of updates for upcoming Marvel Studios projects, to the excitement of MCU fans. The Marvel panel featured many celebrity appearances, of actors from the sets of the likes of Daredevil Born Again and The Marvels. 

The hour-long panel released new announcements and exclusive footage for MCU projects coming up in the next two years. 

Marvel had already made quite a show announcing multiple projects, all up till 2025, with movies and series spanning the MCU Phases Four, Five, and Six at SDCC 2022. The Hall H panel at this year’s Comic-Con had revealed so much that it’s a surprise that Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige still had more new information to share.

The D23 Expo Marvel panel featured updates from upcoming shows like Werewolf By Night, Loki Season 2, Secret Invasion, Armor Wars, Ironheart, Daredevil: Born Again, and Echo.

Secret Invasion, Samuel L. Jackson’s upcoming MCU show, coming to Disney+ in 2023, got its first trailer. It features Nick Fury’s return to Earth after Maria Hill’s many missed calls to the ex-director of S.H.I.E.L.D. The trailer captures Fury in the middle of a Skrull invasion on Earth and how he is the only one who can bring an end to it.

Other cast members returning for the show are Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes, Colbie Smulders’ Maria Hill, and Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross. Making their MCU debuts, with glimpses of their characters in the trailer, are Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke and The Crown actress Olivia Coman.

Don Cheadle also confirmed an MCU series that Marvel had missed at SDCC 2022. Cheadle confirmed War Machine’s return in Armor Wars, which will be set directly after Secret Invasion. The panel also announced that the series will begin filming in 2023, with a new logo disclosed at Hall D23.

Armor Wars

The first Marvel Studios Special Presentation, Werewolf by Night, got a new poster and its first trailer at the panel. The black-and-white retro horror story, streaming from October 7 onwards on Disney+, will feature the MCU debut of the Marvel Comics character the Man-Thing.

Directed by Michael Giacchino, the series stars Gael García Bernal as Jack Russel’s Werewolf by Night and Laura Donnelly as the monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone. Marvel’s dive into the horror genre with Werewolf by Night will open up a new path for the MCU to explore.

Loki Season 2 introduced their newest cast member Ke Huy Quan, who will be paying a TVA Agent in the upcoming season of the MCU series. The cast welcomed the actor and disclosed Kang the Conqueror’s takeover of the TVA and the repercussions that will echo up to the Avengers films set for 2025.

With filming completed only recently, Echo revealed exclusive footage at the D23 Expo, confirming Kingpin’s return. Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’onoforio, will sport a new eye patch, courtesy of Maya Lopez, who shot him in the Hawkeye finale. He is all set to be a key villain in the upcoming series, releasing in Summer 2023.

Ironheart

Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, is making her MCU debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. Dominique Thorne will be returning in 2023 to play the titular character in the upcoming series about MCU’s next genius innovator. 

Marvel’s panel revealed a new logo for Ironheart and introduced the main antagonist, magical villain The Hood, played by Anthony Ramos. The exclusive footage showed Ramos’ look as the main villain and Riri’s life at MIT.

After Netflix canceled Daredevil, Marvel Studios revealed Charlie Cox’s comeback as Matt Murdock under the MCU banner. After making cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home and in the upcoming episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Matt Murdock/Daredevil will have his own MCU series.

Daredevil: Born Again actors Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Vincent D’onoforio (Kingpin) came to the D23 Expos and showed their interest in coming back for the upcoming series, which got a new logo at the panel. The 18-part series will release on Disney+ sometime in 2024.

Apart from the multiple Disney+ series, the Marvel panel at the D23 Expo also had several updates and sneak peeks at upcoming MCU films. The films showcased at D23 include Captain America: New World Order, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and The Marvels.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, coming to theaters on November 11, 2022, kicked things off at the panel with exclusive footage highlighting Wakanda’s weak position after its secret existence was revealed to the world. The clip also featured Tenoch Huerta’s Namor battling Wakanda warrior M’Baku (Winston Duke).

Speaking about never-before-seen footage, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s video confirmed the film’s direct tie to the 2025 film Avengers: Kang Dynasty. The clip revealed Bill Murray’s character and featured Kang’s offer to Scott for a heist in the quantum realm!

There were many new cast additions to Captain America: New World Order, seeing some surprising returns and new entries. A fresh logo for the film, releasing on May 3, 2024, was revealed at the panel, as was the return of Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah Bradley, who we last saw in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

And as a huge surprise, another character from the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk will be returning to the MCU! The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, will be featured in the upcoming movie, 14 years after his first entry into the MCU.

Captain America: New World Order will also introduce the new Falcon after Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson took up Captain America’s mantle. The panel introduced Joaquin Torres, played by Danny Ramierez, as the new Falcon in a sneak peek of the 2024 film.

The panel confirmed the seven characters of the Thunderbolts in the 2024 film. Marvel’s Thunderbolts revealed a team consisting of Yelena Belova, The Taskmaster, Red Guardian (Black Widow), Winter Soldier, Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine, John Walker (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier), and Ghost (Ant-Man and The Wasp).

After Ms. Marvel’s post-credits scene established that any use of their powers leads to an exchange of realities, the Marvels have to team up and figure out a way to stop this from happening. 

Exclusive footage from the upcoming 2023 film concluded this as the plot point behind the team-up between Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau’s Spectrum, and Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel.

The update for Fantastic Four crushed fans’ hopes of a cast reveal when the only news shared WandaVision’s Matt Shakman’s involvement as director for the MCU reboot of the first family.

Thus concludes all the updates coming out of Hall D23 at the Disney Expo for Marvel studios. Fans can’t wait for more updates on the 2025 projects and the actualization of some of their favorite heroes in the MCU.
