Introducing Peraltiago Junior: Amy And Jake’s Baby!

We did it this time: Title of your sex tape. Is that what Jake told Amy when the two finally get pregnant? I bet he did.

After all of Amy’s calculations, debates and organized schedules and routines, she finally gave birth to Jake and her son in Season 7 of Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Nothing happens in the 99th precinct without some trouble and the same is applicable to the day Peraltiago (Amy and Jake’s ship name given by fans) Junior arrived. Amy went into labour in the precinct, Jake had to run to reach right on time and Amy practically delivered her baby while working!

But knowing Amy, that is just normal, isn’t it? But the best part is Amy and Jake’s son is finally here and hopefully we will get to see more of him and Jake and Amy as parents in Season 8.

Peraltiago’s journey from partners against crime to partners is phenomenal. They are arguably the most unproblematic and healthiest couple in television in a long time. Their journey, dynamics and chemistry reminds me of the iconic Mondler (Monica and Chandler) from FRIENDS.

In fact, both the couples had a similar journey to becoming parents as well. Let’s look at Peraltiago’s adorable one this time!

1. Does Amy and Jake Have A Baby?

Amy Santiago and Jake Peralta have a son together named Mac Peralta who is born in the season 7 finale (Episode 13) titled “Lights Out”. The baby was born after the couple were seen to be trying for a while to get pregnant.

Amy realizes that her water broke while she was working on a city wide emergency. Rosa was with her at that point, and she suggests Amy should run to the hospital immediately. (Rosa finds births gross!)

Amy says that she has not even had one contraction yet – and there it comes! She ended up delaying going to the hospital since she is busy working and her delivery happens in the precinct itself.

As is typical of the 99th precinct, nothing happens at the right place at the right time. So obviously, Jake was out foiling a bank robbery while Amy went into labour. Also, Amy actually managed to take care of a city wide emergency while giving birth.

This kid is really “liquid fire” in the words of Peralta. Also, “the hottest baby in town”. I would bet that is true! (Look at his parents, come on! These two will definitely create the hottest kid ever.)

When the baby is finally here, Jake wonders if it was all “a warning of the universe” considering he almost missed the birth of his son, had the baby at the precinct and a firefighter touched the new-born!

But everything went well finally, even if Amy gave birth in the precinct and Jake reaches right on time to see his son.

2. What is Amy and Jake’s Baby Called?

Introducing Peraltiago Junior: Amy and Jake’s Baby!
Jake and Amy

Amy and Jake’s baby is named Mac Santiago Peralta. He is named after John McClane from Die Hard who is Jake’s hero.

According to Dan Goor, the co-creator of the series, Mac was not their first option while choosing a name for Peraltiago’s baby. He mentioned “Hans Gruber” to be one of the options.

Other options according to Goor included naming the new-born after either Amy or Jake’s fathers but “that felt really wrong.” Naming the kid after Captain Holt would again be a bit too much. So, the creators finally settled on Mac.

Goor also mentioned that they were unsure at first whether Amy and Jake should have children. But he added, “I really am happy we went through with it.” So are we.

3. Amy and Jake’s Debate About Having Kids

One of the funniest, yet very significant scenes in Brooklyn Nine Nine is the debate that Amy and Jake have regarding having children.

The scene from Season 6 Episode 12 titled “Casecation” is loaded with witty humour like the entire show gifts us with and the cherry on the cake is Captain Holt as the point keeper!

Amy being the perfectionist is ready with pages of points and research while Jake has just written down what he felt. Most of the points go to Amy, but why I particularly like this scene is because the show subtly portrays how important having this discussion is.

The importance of such conversations is extremely significant in a relationship and the Peraltiago conversation reveals the same. Amy puts forward the fact that it is not impossible to handle work and kids together, and many have done it.

In contrast, Jake finally admits why he is sceptical about having children. It has a lot to do with his father and how he is afraid that he will not be able to be a good dad to his child. Jake’s fears are valid but so are Amy’s fairly put forward points.

But both decide to take each other’s opinions into consideration and decide to wait for a while before trying for a baby. Later however, the two decide to begin trying early when Jake decides that he is ready for it.

4. Amy And Jake’s Journey To Becoming Parents

As Season 7 begins, Amy and Jake begin trying to have a baby. It reminds me so much of OG sitcom couples such as Monica and Chandler or Marshall and Lily, since this journey to have a baby is quite common in most classic sit-coms.

Amy Santiago is a perfectionist and organization freak, we all know it. In this sphere too, she was no different. From creating perfect routines, sleep schedules and exercise timelines for Jake to making charts and Venn diagrams to track their progress, she is the Queen!

All of this is worth it because according to Amy, this can “increase their chance of getting pregnant by 19%!”

In Season 7 Episode 6 titled “Trying”, we see this process in detail. Amy is all set to track ovulation windows, menstrual cycles and every uterine deposit, which means sex.

She works really hard, from feeding Jake vitamins to banning him from playing video games and of course following the same routine herself. But unfortunately, none of this seems to work at first.

According to Amy, it is a “test” and they’re failing because they are not studying hard enough. Jake suggests that since they tried it the Amy way and the Jake way, they should try it the Hitchcock way – to make all bad decisions.

In short, having sex unplanned so they can get pregnant. But when none of this works, Amy gets really bummed out because she was trying so hard. Jake comforts her and tells her that the two of them are already a family and this may take some time.

Another perfect Peraltiago moment, where it is so clear how transparent and beautiful their relationship is. So when finally this works out for them, it is nothing but happiness for us and all other B99 fans for sure!

5. When Does Amy Tell Jake She Is Pregnant?

This one is quite a cute moment.

Introducing Peraltiago Junior: Amy and Jake’s Baby!
Amy in S7 E7 “Ding Dong”

Amy tells Jake she is pregnant in Season 7 Episode 7 titled “Ding Dong”. Amy realizes that there’s something wrong with her hormones and she feels that it could have something to do with this. So she took a pregnancy test and it came positive.

“We’re having a baby?” “Were having a baby!” Jake and Amy has several beautiful moments over seasons but it feels personally comfortable to see the two being so happy. Not to mention how exciting it is to meet Junior Peraltiago.

I demand at least one scene of Mac as a toddler or a school going kid. Maybe it could come in the finale of Season 8 as a skip to the future scene? It would be epic to find out if Mac is towards library sciences or NYPD!
