After a tragic episode last week, Andor episode 10 has been one of the best in the series so far!
It had suspense, emotion, scheming, politics, and everything you’d expect in a classic Star Wars saga.
Episode 9 presented a sorry picture for Cassian Andor and his inmates at the Narkina-5 prison. In addition, Mon Mothma’s despair and Bix Caleen’s torture made it even sadder. So, we expected a rise in tempo in this week’s episode. And Lucasfilm delivered!
The Ending Explained: A Shawshankesque Prison Saga
Kino Loy: And that (prison sentence) ends today. There is one way out
Kino Loy is finally on board with Andor’s escape plan. Ulaf’s death and the massacre at Level 2 have finally awakened him. He knows that even if he serves the 200-odd shifts that are left, he’d be just shifted to another level. There is no natural escape from this hellhole.
Time is of the essence here. They decide to stage the heist the following day.
The whole scene is filled with tension. We can see the prisoners hiding scrap metal bars behind their backs, ready to hit the guards.
They stop the elevator halfway down and use it to climb the rest of the way up.
Two prisoners try to attack the guards and get fried by the electrified water flooding the floor. This triggers the mutiny at last.
The incredible cinematography perfectly portrays the nuances of a typical rebellion. The prisoners have nothing to lose. That is perfectly reflected in their faces.
The ending of the rebellion is just as unanticipated as the rest of the episode. The prisoners find an exit that leads straight into the ocean. Everyone jumps except Kino Loy. He reveals that he doesn’t know how to swim.
A man stuck in prison for life finally finds an escape, only to realize that he is doomed!
The moment is played perfectly by Andy Serkis. The sadness and disbelief in his eyes are just too much to take for us! The next scene sees Andor and Melshi escape to the mainland of Narkina-5, free at last.
The episode ends with a meeting between Luthen Rael and Lonni Jung. Lonny Jung is a mole in the empire, working for the rebellion group. The conversation is ironic because Luthen can’t stop talking about what he has given for the rebellion. On the other hand, Lonny knows that it is nothing compared to the hardships he’s had to face.
Lonny declares that he is resigning. He has a kid, and the rebellion is too dangerous for him.
Luthen turns down the resignation and implores him to continue working for the rebellion.
It is unlikely that Luthen will live till the end of the season. Maybe, that will force Andor to take the uprising more seriously.
The building blocks leading to the events of Rogue One have finally started falling in place!
