Oscars to Initiate Reviewing After To Leslie’s Surprise Nomination

Following the reveal of this year’s Oscars nominations, the board of the awards ceremony has filed a campaign to review its nominations procedure. While their official statement doesn’t allude to the reason, we’re sure they’re checking for unethical selection because of Andrea Riseborough’s surprising nomination in the Best Actress category.

The nominees’ list for this year’s Oscars ceremony was released on January 24, and in the Best Actress Category, among big names like Michelle Yeoh, Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, and Michelle Williams, was Andrea Riseborough. THR released the statement given by the Academy announcing the review campaign, and you can read it in its entirety below:

It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted fairly and ethically, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process.

We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees to ensure that no guidelines were violated and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication.

We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances.

Riseborough scored a nomination after a grassroots campaign conducted by several A-List celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Kate Winslet, and Edward Norton for her performance in the indie film To Leslie.

The actress was commended for her stellar performance by critics, and while grassroots campaigns are not against the Oscars policy, it was shocking to see her name against the top Hollywood actresses. To Leslie grossed a total of $27K, which is suitable for an indie film, but a meager earning compared to the million-dollar films in the category.

Even Riseborough was “astounded” by the sole major award nomination and claimed she wasn’t “entirely sure how the ***k this happened.” The grassroots campaign reportedly did use unethical means of directly emailing Academy members, and the Academy will look into the matter at length to ensure such acts aren’t repeated.
