Ant-Man 3 “Secret” Filming Takes Place in San Francisco

All seems to be on track for Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as an insider scoop from KCBS Radio reports a very discreet two-day shoot in San Francisco for the film, which took place last weekend.

After confirmation of a third Ant-Man film came through in 2019, February 17, 2023 was decided upon as the release date. The film was developed during 2020 with filming scheduled for February 2021.

Principal shooting, both at Pinewood Studios (UK) and San Francisco was set to begin in June 2021, making the “secret” filming in San Francisco very much in line with the production schedule. One of the film’s SF officials confirmed the same to KCBS Radio.

A filming notice drawn up by PYM Productions was sent to residents of the area. Pym – ring a bell? A certain set of particles that can change the size of your body? Quite a cheeky filming notice and one that doesn’t pull in too much unwanted attention to the big franchise.

As per the permit license, on this particular weekend the San Francisco’s Central Police Station was listed as the primary filming location. External shots of the building and downtown area were also taken.

Since many of these were plate shots, that is, shooting the background without the movie’s characters in it, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Michele Pfeiffer were listed as “not present [on location] but in scenes.”

The civilian personas of Scott Lang (played by Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (played by Evangeline Lilly) are based in the city by the bay.

One of the most famous San Fran locations in the Ant-Man franchise (that, even one can visit!) is that of Milgrom Hotel, which Lang moves into in the first Ant-Man movie. Its real-world location is the historic Riviera Hotel located on Jones Street, Tenderloin District, San Francisco.

Despite of the appearances of many San Francisco’s iconic locations, much of the first two Ant-Man films were actually shot in Pinewood Atlanta studios, Georgia. Ant-Man 3 will follow suit, as confirmed by Film & TV Industry Alliance.

Much of the Ant-Man 3 storyline remains unknown. During the weekend filming, a resolution allowing the film to use San Francisco Police Department’s insignia was adopted by the San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors.

Besides Rudd, Lilly and Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer plays Janet Van Dyne with Kathryn Newton replacing Emma Fuhrmann as Cassie Lang. Lastly, Jonathan Majors has been casted as Kang the Conqueror, the time-travelling antagonist.
