Directed by two-time Oscar nominee Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, Wolfwalkers has a runtime of one hour and 42 minutes. It is Cartoon Saloon Animation Studio’s fourth feature-length film.

Cartoon Saloon has previously created “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea,” which are based on Irish legends.

The film had its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2020. It was released theatrically on November 13 by GKIDS in the United States. Apple acquired the rights to Wolfwalkers back in 2018, and it was released digitally on Apple TV+ on December 11, 2020.

Wolfwalkers has won an AFI FEST prize and has been named best animated film by multiple critics groups, like the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, Dublin Critics Circle, Chicago Film Critics Association, San Diego Film Critics Society, Alliance of Women Film Journalists, among others.

The film received ten nominations at the 48th annual Annie Awards and secured five wins with Best Indie Feature category, Best Character Design, Best Direction, Best Production Design, and Best Voice Acting.

Even though Soul won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, many fans believed that Wolfwalkers should have won as it was the better film. This gave Moore his third Oscar nomination, having received nominations for each film in his ‘Irish Folklore Trilogy.’

Apple received its first Academy Award nominations for its feature films since Apple TV+’s launch over a year ago.

Wolfwalkers was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Greyhound for Best Sound. Including this year’s nominations, Apple has a total of 81 wins and 329 nominations to date.

Suffice to say, Apple made a wise decision by acquiring Wolfwalkers’ rights. This might lead to growth in streams for Apple TV+. So far, the critics have only had good things to say about the animated film, including its story, design, animation, aesthetics, etc.

Cartoon Saloon recently signed with CAA and is currently in production on My Father’s Dragon for Netflix.

The studio is also in production on the Puffin Rock Movie. Cartoon Saloon develops and produces all of its projects in-house at its studio in Kilkenny, Ireland, with a crew of over 175 animators and technicians and growing.

Wolfwalkers is based on an old Irish folktale about a young apprentice hunter named Robyn. In a time of superstition and magic, Robyn goes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack.

While exploring the forbidden lands, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, who has the ability to transform into a wolf by night. Robyn is drawn further into the enchanted world of the WolfWalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

About Wolfwalkers

Wolfwalkers is a 2020 animated fantasy adventure film directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart. The film is the third and final installment in Moore’s “Irish Folklore Trilogy”, following his previous films The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014).

An international co-production led by Cartoon Saloon and Mélusine Productions, the latest entry in the Irish Folklore trilogy has been created with hand-drawn animation, an art form that was at one time the de facto way to animate but has now become too costly.

Wolfwalkers follows the story of Robyn Goodfellowe, a young apprentice hunter who arrives in Ireland with her father during a time of superstition and magic to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to turn into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
