Avatar 2 Passes Lion King & Jurassic World in All-Time Top 10

James Cameron’s blockbuster sequel Avatar: The Way of Water is following its predecessor’s path and climbing up the box office charts weekly. Since its release on December 16, 2022, four weeks have passed, and the film has secured the seventh rank in the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time.

The film was at the ninth slot in the previous week, but after tallying this weekend’s worldwide earnings, the film stands at $1.708 billion. The film surpassed Jon Favreau’s 2019 remake of The Lion King ($1.663 billion) and Colin Trevorrow’s 2015 film Jurassic World ($1.671 billion).

James Cameron’s Avatar sequel also made him the only director with three titles in the top 10 list. But what are the chances of the movie moving up on the list?

Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.916 billion) holds the sixth position, followed by Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($2.069 billion), and Cameron’s own Titanic ($2.201 billion).

With the sequel making approximately $500 million per week so far, the film will have no trouble getting up to #3 on the top 10 list in its fifth week. But to secure its predecessor’s rank, the film still has a long way to go and will have to earn another billion and then some to cross the $2.922 billion mark.

Not to mention, Gerard Johnstone’s M3gan toppled the sequel from its position last week, and with more films upcoming, the film’s steady rise may start to fall. There’s no telling where the 2022 film will end up at the end of its box office run yet, but we’re betting on it climbing higher.
