According to Hollywood Reporter, the film hit another huge milestone this weekend. It has reached a worldwide collection of $ 2 billion, making it one of just six films to have ever crossed this mark.

Moreover, James Cameron has directed three of the six films on that coveted list. The other two are his 1997 blockbuster Titanic and Avatar: The Way of Water’s predecessor, Avatar (2009).

There are a lot of factors that have contributed to the exponential box-office collections of Avatar movies over the years.

Firstly, Avatar films are known for their cutting-edge special effects. This makes watching it in 3D or higher resolutions a lucrative bargain. These screening options are almost twice as expensive as the normal ones, which helps boost the overall collections.

Secondly, Avatar already had a massive built-in audience, and they were waiting with bated breath for the sequel to come out. Thus, the film had a solid fanbase even before its release, and Cameron’s charisma was the cherry on the cake!

Another major reason is the scarcity of high-budget blockbusters post-COVID era. The pandemic has reduced the number of tentpole blockbusters per year. The most recent one before Avatar 2 was Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, coming out on November 11. With such long gaps between movies, the fans were eagerly waiting for Avatar 2.

The next tentpole movie will be the next MCU entry, Ant-Man, and the Wasp: Quantumania which will release on February 17. Avatar: The Way of Water will still have three solid weeks to dominate the ticket sales unimpeded before the MCU entry takes over.

Combining all these with the fact that Avatar: The Way of Water has been the only pandemic-era American film to release in China, the Avatar sequel was almost destined to succeed!
