James Cameron Says the Story of Avatar 2 Is Going to Be Unpredictable

In 2009, James Cameron released Avatar, an epic sci-fi film that was highly commended for its groundbreaking array of visual effects, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.

The film’s grand success led to the renewal of four sequels from 20th Century Fox under the acclaimed director, with the first of the sequels due to hit theaters on December 16.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set ten years after the first film’s events and will pick up Jake Sullivan and Neytiri’s story as the Na’vi tribe fight for their survival once again.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel, and other returning cast members include Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. New additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Britain Dalton, Cliff Curtis, CCH Pounder, and Jamie Flatters.

Fans of the 2009 film could only harp on one flaw of the spectacular movie—the story’s predictability amid the mind-blowing visual effects and moving acting. But James Cameron has assured fans that this will not be the case in the sequel.

In an interview with IGN, the Avatar director guaranteed that the audience “won’t be able to predict” the story of Avatar: The Way of Water. He took the criticism for the first film and planned the sequel’s narrative in such a sense that the movie’s magic will not be dull for its viewers.

I guarantee you, you won’t be able to predict it. What people hate the most is to go and see a movie and say, ‘oh… predictable.’ I don’t think this is predictable. I defy anybody to predict where this story goes.

Of course, Cameron would have a criticism-free story with an airtight plot and the narrative in his sequel, considering he’s worked on it for over a decade. And if anything, the 3D experience of the film is going to be kicked into the fifth gear with the visuals promised to be even more mesmerizing than the first film.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be out on December 16 this year. With the principal photography for the third installment of the Avatar franchise already wrapped up, we can expect the sequel to the 2022 film sometime in 2024.
