No Delay for Avatar 2 Again, Confirms 20th Century President

The President of 20th Century Fox, Steve Asbell has confirmed that James Cameron’s much awaited next directorial, the sequel to the 2009 fantasy sci-fi Avatar, Avatar 2, will not be delayed further. It will release in 2022, as expected.

The release date of Avatar 2 was announced to be 16th December, 2022. Due to the pandemic, much of the production was hampered and the release date was shifted from 2021.

However, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Asbell confirmed that Avatar 2 will stick to its original release date. Furthermore, Asbell said that Avatar 2 is going to ‘blow people away’.

For real. It’s going to blow people away. You’re not ready for what Jim is doing.

Avatar 2 had been on production for quite a long time now, along with three other planned sequels in the franchise. The first film in the franchise, Avatar, released in 2009 and shattered several records.

It also marked James Cameron’s return to the cinemas, since his last directorial, Titanic (1997), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Like Titanic, Avatar also became a historic film of its time and established Cameron as one of the most successful filmmakers in Hollywood.

The film’s use of 3D technology popularized its use to a great degree, so much so that major studios and production houses began releasing most of their films in 3D. Avatar can arguably be credited to have begun the 3D craze in Hollywood.

Fans of the film have been waiting for a sequel from Cameron since the release of the first film, with an ambitious line-up of sequels to be followed soon, which were announced back in 2016.

Asbell’s claim that people are ‘not ready’ for what Cameron is making seems to be a valid one, since the director waited until a different form of underwater CGI could be developed before making the awaited Avatar sequel.

It seems like 20th Century Fox and James Cameron are playing their cards carefully and have elaborate plans for the future. Let us hope that Cameron’s labor of love does not fail to mesmerize us once again.
