Avatar to Re-release in Theaters Ahead of Sequel, Tickets Now on Sale

James Cameroon’s 2009 action-adventure film, Avatar, is re-releasing in theaters, and tickets to the two-week limited release are now on sale. The film is re-releasing three months before its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, hits the screens.

The 2009 science-fiction action-adventure film is one of the most ambitious films of our time, celebrated for its unique storytelling, stunning visuals, and excellent world-building. It turned out to be the highest-grossing film of all time, collecting over $2.8 million at the box office.

Avatar follows the story of Jake Sully, a paraplegic ex-Marine who participates in an experimental program to insert his mind into the genetically-created body of a Na’vi. The Na’vi are a group of superior alien creatures who are inhabitants of the mineral-rich planet of Pandora.

Though Jake initially goes to Pandora on a secret mission to gather information about the Na’vi for Colonel Miles Quaritch, he ends up falling in love with the Na’vi chief’s daughter, Neytiri. He eventually aligns himself with the natives’ plight, setting himself up for war against the intruding humans.

Three months ahead of the release of its much-awaited sequel and the second film in the franchise, Avatar is all set to grace the big screen once again. The film will re-release in an updated 4K high-dynamic-range digital print to give the audience an even clearer image of the movie than before.

Prior to the re-release, the film was removed from Disney+ to encourage the audience to return to the theaters to experience the film once again. However, it was promised that the film would return to the platform before Avatar: The Way of Water releases in theaters this December.

Avatar also got a new poster and trailer to announce that tickets for the re-release are now on sale. The highest-grossing film of all time will return to theaters on September 23, 2022, for a two-week limited engagement. Check out the new trailer and poster below.

Avatar’s re-release is intended to be an efficient marketing strategy to promote Avatar: The Way of Water, scheduled to come out during the holiday season. The film was made on an ambitious budget of over $250 million, with plans of making three more sequels in the future.

With its enormous budget, the producers are under a lot of pressure to come up with a sequel that will match up to the sales of its predecessor. Re-releasing Avatar in theaters gives the production houses a chance to make a little extra money to help ease the cost of future sequels. Moreover, it will also help refresh the audience’s memory of Avatar’s story once again, considering that it first came out more than a decade ago.

Although Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time, its sequel may not be as successful as its predecessor, given the current theatrical climate. It will be interesting to see if the story and script remain as strong as in the previous film because VFX and special effects alone cannot make a film work.

Nevertheless, if you did not get a chance to watch Avatar the last time, the re-release could be a great opportunity to experience some larger-than-life spectacle on the big screen. The sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, will release in theaters on December 16, 2022.
