Babylon 5 is one of the landmark TV shows in the sci-fi genre, which has generated a cult following since its run in the 90s.
In 2021, series creator J. Michael Straczynski announced that WB and CW are joining hands in bringing to life a new reboot series that will feature the whole story in a new light, and they even called in the original creator.
But since the announcement, no updates for the reboot series have followed, and now original TV series star Bruce Boxleiter has spoken up on the subject.
When asked by ComicBook about any new updates on the sci-fi reboot, the John Sheridan actor declared he hadn’t “heard a thing” from the higher-ups after “big corporate shakeups” at WB and CW.
You can read his full quote from the interview below:
I haven’t heard a thing. I haven’t heard a thing. I know there were big corporate shakeups going on at Warner Brothers and CW and all that, so I don’t know how it’s played out.John Sheridan
While Disney+ is doing alright with its multiple sci-fi shows exploring the space and beyond, yes, I mean the various Star Wars spinoff series like Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Bad Batch, etc., Babylon 5 might not share the same luck.
Things at the CW seem shaky enough after Nexstar’s takeover and the number of scripted shows going down to five in the financial year of 2023-2024. With many shows like Superman & Lois, The Winchesters, and more standing at the edge of cancelation, the CW will not likely take up a new show and start from scratch.
A sad day indeed for all Babylon 5 fans, but never say never. HBO Max has taken over several projects in the past few months after other production and streaming companies have dropped the ball.
And with the popularity of the sci-fi genre on the rise, the reboot series might have some hope of getting picked up, even if it’s not anytime soon.
What do you think – will Babylon 5 finally get the long-awaited reboot, or will it be written off as one of the fantasies that won’t ever be realized? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
