8 Spine-chilling True Crime Documentaries on Netflix

Netflix is known for bringing us some of the best documentaries, and the way it has popularized the true crime and serial killer genre is incredible.

The platform did so at a time when documentaries were going out of style, and now people can’t wait to know about the next true-crime documentary releasing on the platform.

Take, for instance, Conversation With a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes or even World’s Worst Roommate. These are two of the latest documentaries in the genre and people can’t stop raving about them.

So, I decided to list the 8 best true crime documentaries on Netflix that will send a chill down your spine.

1. The Keepers

No. of Episodes – 8

The Keepers

The Keepers is an almost gloomy yet deeply disturbing tale of a convent school sister who was murdered back in 1969. I won’t tell you any more about this because that would ruin the experience, but let me warn you.

It takes a lot to go through the eight-episode docuseries. The events described and unraveled are not for the faint-hearted.

2. Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich

No. of Episodes – 4

Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich

This limited series depicts much more recent events than the previous one. It is a classic exposé of one of America’s most well-connected millionaires, Jeffrey Epstein.

He has been seen with the likes of Prince Andrew from the Royal Family, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and many more.

He was a powerful, wealthy man exposed as a sex offender and a human trafficker. The stories narrated by victims in this documentary will make you question our system and how far it supports people in power.

But more than anything, it’ll make you empathize with those who continue to carry those memories and trauma long after the man is gone.

3. Don’t F*ck with Cats

No. of Episodes – 3

Don’t F*ck with the Cats

Don’t F*ck with Cats is a classic narrative that shows how a person starts with killing animals and then moves towards killing human beings. Perhaps not as harrowing as the previous two documentaries, but it will creep you out.

4. Evil Genius

No. of Episodes – 8

Evil Genius

Evil Genius is one of those documentaries which just can’t be categorized. It involves a heist, a bombing, manipulation, murder, and a whole lot more.

While this story might not be deeply disturbing, it surely will shock you with all the twists and turns it depicts.

Another thing it does really well is showcase how deeply flawed and twisted the human mind can be. There are certain documentaries that try to portray the same, but turn out to be superficial. With this one, the creators have certainly hit the mark.

5. Making a Murderer

No. of Episodes – 20 (2 Seasons)

Making a Murderer

Making a Murderer is a two-season docuseries and follows a slow-burn format. As far as documentaries go, I think this is one of the most insightful pieces of content I have ever seen.

It delves into the mindset of the person accused, the state system, biases, and so on.

It leaves you with a mixed bag of emotions where one moment you feel sympathy for the people involved, and in another, there’s nothing but rage. Both Seasons 1 and 2 are a must-watch for everyone.

6. The Confession Killer

No. of Episodes – 5

The Confession Killer

The Confession Killer is yet another serial documentary that you can binge. However, the focus is less on the killer himself and more on the legal system. It shows two aspects of the events.

One side is how the killer manipulated and misled law enforcement by telling the most random things. The other side is how the law enforcement didn’t do enough to get justice for his victims.

7. Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal

Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal

Operation Varsity Blues is not your usual crime documentary that involves violence of any kind. However, it uncovers one of America’s biggest scandals, exposing the best universities in the country.

It shows how Stanford, UCLA, Yale, and other such universities have backdoor policies for students who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to make it into the university. All this is because of a man called Rick Singer.

What truly makes this documentary significant is its messaging. It shows how students across the country desperately want to get into these colleges and how they associate their self-worth with it and make it their sole purpose in life.

However, the colleges they’ve put on a pedestal are not as pristine as they thought. It shows how it’s not just about the money involved but truly transforms the way people need to see exams, colleges, and admissions.

8. The Devil Next Door

The Devil Next Door

This is yet another documentary that doesn’t involve violence. It is about a Ukrainian immigrant, who is a grandfather, living in the US, working in a Ford factory. One day, the US government knocks on his door, accusing him of being a Nazi.

This is the story’s premise, and whether he is truly a Nazi or not is the story. While most of the events in the series are predictable, there are a few moments where the show throws you off.
