Did ‘Billions’ Get Canceled or Renewed?

Showtime’s Billions is finally returning with a bang after quite a long wait.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the Billions cast will resume filming for the rest of Season 5. And they did! Now, the show is finally all set to come back with five new episodes.

The good news is not over yet. The show has been renewed for Season 6 already, all set to premiere in early 2022.

So what exactly happened? Basically, Billions stopped airing after the mid-season finale, which was Season 5 Episode 7. The reason is not anything extraordinary. It is what has been ruining our lives for part one and a half years – the Covid-19 pandemic halted filming and production for the team.

Fans of Billions are quite excited because they have been waiting for almost a year for their favorite show to resume. Gosh, imagine that struggle.

1. Did Billions Get Canceled?

Billions did not get canceled. It stopped with a mid-season finale after episode seven due to complications related to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s scheduled to return soon.

Brian Koppelman

In fact, the showrunner Brian Koppelman had assured us via Twitter that they “cannot get back to work and finish the season when it is safe.” So the show was never on the canceled list.

But yes, it did stop airing for an indefinite amount of time. But the showrunners kept their promise and now it is back!

2. When Will Billions Return? Has It Been Renewed?

Showtime’s Billions is all set to return with the second half of season 5 on Sunday, September 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The show will be back with five brand new episodes.

Considering where the mid-season finale ended, it is hard to contain the excitement for the new episodes!

Besides, Billions has also been renewed for a season 6 even before the second half of season 5 was aired. So if you were worried about your favorite show, here’s the time to rejoice because Billions isn’t going anywhere yet!

3. Why Did Billions Stop Airing?

Showtime had previously announced that season 5 of Billions will be divided into two parts due to changes in the production schedule during the Covid-19 pandemic. So, Billions stopped airing after season 5 Episode 7.

Here is what David Costabile said about resuming filming in an interview with TV Fanatic:

We will go back and finish the end of the last few episodes of season five, and then we will continue working straight through and shoot season six. So next year, it will be an onslaught of Billions because we will just work from when we start until when we finish season six.

4. A Recap Of Episode 7

The last episode of Billions to air before it stopped for an indefinite amount of time is Episode 7 of the fifth season. Billions is a complicated show and there are a hell of lot of details to keep in mind while watching.

So here is a short recap of what we witnessed till now in the show. The episode is titled “Limitless Sh**” and rightly so.

Axe and Wendy

In Episode 7, we see Axe going through quite a hard time. He is all set to challenge his adversaries and also needs to ensure Wendy’s loyalty towards him.

Chuck, Axe’s staunch enemy has taken down all of Axe’s allies. So in short, Axe is having a hard time. So, his solution is to turn to this mind-enhancing drug that apparently opens up limitless sh**. This, he believes will help him deal with his problems and bring down his enemies.

But here’s the problem. The drug is not FDA approved and it is illegal. So Axe can lose billions of dollars but his friends come to his rescue.

Chuck is also facing a big dilemma. His ill father is in urgent need of a healthy kidney, or else it won’t be long until he is dead. But the legal route is going to cost Chuck five years, and he definitely does not have that much time in hand.

What are Chuck’s options then? He can harvest a kidney illegally from a child from El Salvador. This kid is in federal custody for a price of $38,000.

Ofcourse, there are several questions that are left to be answered. That is the reason why Episode 8 is one of the most anticipated and awaited episodes of Billions.

5. What To Expect From The Next Episodes?

First of all, I am looking forward to knowing more about Axe and Prince’s battle. Mike Prince is one of Axe’s greatest enemies and he also provides Chuck with a potential new strength in his fight against Bobby Axelrod.

We can also expect to know if Axe and Wendy will finally get together and whether Senior will survive. There are lots of unsolved questions and I am hoping the new episodes will clear them all.

Reportedly, Janeane Garafolo is all set to guest star as Winslow, the hip owner of a legal cannabis corp in season 5 as well. So lots to look forward to.

Let us hope Billions’ return answers all our questions and also gives us more to ask. Season 6 is on the way after all!!
