Black Bird is an Apple TV+ original miniseries based on the autobiography of James “Jimmy” Keene, In with the Devil. It is the account of a fallen hero, a serial killer, and a dangerous bargain that leads to redemption.

It follows Jimmy’s time in prison where he is offered freedom if he can get the confession from a serial killer.

As in other well-known snitch stories, like Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Black Bird is a suspenseful thriller. It currently holds a 98% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a “Certified Fresh” show. The film has also been a hit with general audiences holding a 97% rating as of now.

Black Bird was written and produced by Dennis Lehane. Among Lehane’s most successful works are Shutter Island and Gone Baby Gone, both of which have been adapted into movies.

Taron Egerton as Jimmy Keene

Taron Egerton is best known for his roles as Elton John in Rocketman and Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in the Kingsman series. In Black Bird, he plays Jimmy Keene. Jimmy turns to drug dealing after failing to get recruited to a major college football team.

After being arrested, he is sentenced to 10 years in prison, but the FBI offers him a chance for release by asking him to befriend a suspected serial killer.

Paul Walter Hauser as Larry Haul

A leading character actor as well as a supporting actor, Paul Walter Hauser is known for Cruella and Cobra Kai. Hauser plays Larry Hall in Black Bird, a suspected serial killer who is Jimmy’s undercover subject. The FBI believes Larry has murdered 14 women, but they have only found one of the bodies, so they need him to confess to the rest.

Ray Liotta as James Keene

Ray Liotta, who starred in Goodfellas, plays Big Jim, Jimmy’s father, in a posthumous appearance. The former police chief had dreamt of seeing Jimmy play football and is devastated to see him in prison. During Jimmy’s attempt to earn his freedom, Big Jim’s health worsens, making Jimmy’s freedom all the more important.

Sepideh Moafi as Agent Lauren McCauley

Moafi is most well-known for appearing in The Deuce. Moafi plays Lauren McCauley in Black Bird, an FBI agent who offers Jimmy Keene his freedom in exchange for Larry Hall, confessing to the murders she suspects he committed.

Greg Kinnear as Brian Miller

Black Bird stars Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear as Brian Miller. Previous to the events of the show, Miller had investigated Larry Hall, and he continues to do so as the story progresses.

Joe Williamson as Co Carter

Williamson has previously appeared in Grey’s Anatomy and now plays Co Carter in Black Bird. Carter is a prison guard at the jail Larry resides at and knows that Jimmy is trying to get his confession.

Robert Wisdom as Edmund Beaumont

In Black Bird, Wisdom plays Edmund Beaumont, the prosecutor who sentenced Jimmy Keene to prison. When Beaumont and McCauley confront Larry Hall about a series of murders, Keene is offered his freedom.

Jake McLaughlin as Gary Hall

McLaughlin was a member of the main cast of Quantico. In Black Bird, he plays Gary Hall, Larry’s twin brother who is also trying to get him out of jail.

Black Bird is an American miniseries developed by Dennis Lehane. The crime drama first premiered on Apple TV+ with weekly episodes in a six-part limited series. The show is based on the 2010 autobiography of James Keene.

As Jimmy Keene begins a 10-year prison sentence, he gets an incredible offer: If he can elicit a confession from the suspected killer, Larry Hall, he will gain his freedom. Completing his mission becomes a challenge of a lifetime.
