Creator Charlie Brooker Has Surprised Himself with Black Mirror: Season 6

Netflix has officially confirmed another season of the critically acclaimed Black Mirror! Considered by many as one of the best television shows, the British series is credited with re-popularizing the anthology television format.

For the uninitiated, each series’ episode is standalone, has different genres, and can be watched in any order. The program won the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Television Movie three times in a row.

The series is an instance of speculative fiction within science fiction set in the near future, and plot twists are a significant characteristic of many of the show’s episodes. Reviewers have also appraised several episodes as prescient.

The latest season of Black Mirror is set to hit Netflix in June 2023. Creator Charlie Brooker says the new season is even more unpredictable and surprising than the previous ones. A highly talented cast and crew are a part of this much-awaited season.

Charles Brooker, the writer and creator of the series, told Tudum, “I can’t wait for people to binge their way through it all and hope they enjoy it — especially the bits they shouldn’t.”

3.   What is the plot of Black Mirror: Season 6?

A scene from Black Mirror: Season 6

A synopsis of Black Mirror: Season 6 is yet to be officially revealed. However, we have gotten several hints and glimpses of the plot from the teaser of the series and from Charlie Brooker, the show’s creator, himself.

Black Mirror is known for how closely related to real life it is and yet highly unpredictable. Brooker says to Tudum, “I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined and can keep reinventing itself.”

That is precisely what Season 6 is. “Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect,” tells Brooker.

“Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is. The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through — but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before.”

Brooker added that he has surprised himself with his work. So, no one needs to worry about whether Black Mirror can carry the surprise element for one more season.

4. Cast of Black Mirror: Season 6

The cast of Black Mirror: Season 6 has been officially announced by Netflix. The series has been touted to star “a cast of actors so talented they frankly have no right to exist,” according to the creator, Charlie Brooker.

The too-talented cast includes:

  • Aaron Paul
  • Anjana Vasan
  • Annie Murphy
  • Auden Thornton
  • Ben Barnes
  • Clara Rugaard
  • Daniel Portman
  • Danny Ramirez
  • David Shields
  • Himesh Patel
  • John Hannah
  • Josh Hartnett
  • Kate Mara
  • Michael Cera
  • Monica Dolan
  • Myha’la Herrold
  • Paapa Essiedu
  • Rob Delaney
  • Rory Culkin
  • Salma Hayek Pinault
  • Samuel Blenkin and
  • Zazie Beetz.

“Bringing it all to life we’ve got an incredible roster of disgustingly skillful, smart directors working with a cast of actors so talented they frankly have no right to exist,” Brooker says to Tudum.

I completely agree with Charlie Brooker’s observation. It is not just the series’ storylines that have so many different styles and the thrill factor, but it has an unbelievable cast and crew to match it.

I can’t wait to watch Black Mirror: Season 6. And I know, so can’t you!

5. About Black Mirror

Black Mirror is a British anthology television series created by Charlie Brooker. Individual episodes explore a diversity of genres, but most are set in near-future dystopias with sci-fi technology—a type of speculative fiction. The series is based on The Twilight Zone and uses technology to comment on contemporary social issues.

The first two seasons of the series aired on the British network Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013. The programme then moved to Netflix in 2016 and its sixth season is scheduled to be released in June 2023.

The series has received critical acclaim and is considered by many reviewers to be one of the best television series of the 2010s. The programme won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie three times consecutively for “San Junipero”, “USS Callister” and Bandersnatch. However, some critics consider the morality of the series obvious or cite declining quality over time. Black Mirror, along with American Horror Story, has been credited with repopularising the anthology television format, and a number of episodes have been seen by reviewers as prescient.
