Advance ticket sales for the MCU’s latest release, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever track ahead of the last MCU film, Thor: Love and Thunder. The upcoming film collected $45 million last weekend, indicating an impressive opening for an MCU film.
Wakanda Forever is the highly anticipated sequel to Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman. Fans have been expecting a lot from Wakanda Forever, considering it is the sequel to Phase 4’s final movie. It must also live up to the high standards set by its predecessor alongside dealing with the tragic real-life passing away of Chadwick Boseman.
The film is finally all set to hit theaters. Advance ticket sales suggest that Marvel Studios might have another massive hit on their hands. According to THR, Wakanda Forever’s advance sales stood at $45 million as of Sunday, November 6. The figure is more than Marvel’s last release, Thor: Love and Thunder but less than Multiverse of Madness.
THR predicts that by Friday the total could be between $60 to $65 million in advance sales, much ahead of the $55 million Black Panther earned in advance bookings back in 2018.
Wakanda Forever will be the MCU’s third release in 2022 and has the potential to have the biggest opening weekend out of the three. Thor: Love and Thunder opened to $144.2 million in July, and Wakanda Forever is expected to beat that.
Its only competition will come from Multiverse of Madness, which collected $90 million on its first day and $187.4 million in its opening weekend. It is currently considered the biggest opening weekend of 2022.
It will also be worth noting whether Wakanda Forever’s opening weekend brings in more money compared to the first Black Panther film, which had a slight decrease in its opening weekend. Even if the sequel doesn’t beat the first film, it has a big chance of becoming one of the MCU’s highest earners.
Wakanda Forever also has the advantage of opening on a holiday weekend as November 11 is Veterans Day. Thus, there could be a greater increase in ticket sales based on the people who walk up to the ticket counter.
Moreover, if Wakanda Forever outgrosses Love and Thunder, it has a fair chance of becoming the biggest opening weekend in the month of November. The record is now held by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which opened to $158.1 million back in November 2013.
