Disney+ confirms Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s position in the MCU’s insanely complex (and devoid of logic at times) timeline.
The Black Panther sequel, released in November 2022, tells a standalone story about the aftermath of T’Challa’s unfortunate demise.
The story begins a few months after the events of Avengers: Endgame to show the condition of Wakanda after T’Challa’s death. After that, they jump one year forward, and the story mostly features the central conflict between Namor and Wakanda.
Due to the relatively simple and standalone nature of the story, it seems that placing Black Panther: Wakanda forever in the MCU’s timeline will be a fairly straightforward affair, but that has never been the case with MCU, especially Phase 4.
Disney + is always at the helm of all the confusion as it repeatedly places Marvel creatives at different points in its chronological order’s playlist compared to other resources and guides.
According to Disney+’s ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order’, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set between Moon Knight and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. It shows that the film was set sometime during the spring of 2025.
The Placement of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is Right and Wrong
Disney+’s placement of Black Panther 2 might be correct in some ways. The film’s setting is at least a year and a few months after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Since Endgame is believed to have ended in October 2023, a minimum of one year’s gap takes us to late 2024.
Also, it is teased that Nakia hasn’t been in Wakanda for over six years after she left to raise T’Challa’s son. That’s why Black Panther: Wakanda Forever happening in spring 2025 makes sense.
However, ‘sense’ in MCU Phase 4’s timeline doesn’t come without a barrage of caveats.
Disney+ may be right about the placement of Black Panther 2 between Moon Knight and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, but it has messed up the film’s position in the overall MCU chronological timeline. Let’s discuss how.
She-Hulk takes place in the summer of 2025, and we have sufficient evidence to believe that Moon Knight takes place in the summer of 2024. But Disney+ places Moon Knight after Hawkeye, which takes place in Christmas 2024.
This would mean that Moon Knight happens in Spring 2025, but the show’s attention to detail for lunar phases doesn’t coincide with the timeline here.
There are several other places where Disney+’s positioning is debatable, if not outright incorrect. Thor: Love and Thunder is positioned in the summer of 2025, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is suggested to take place before Hawkeye. So, these two films need to switch their positions in the timeline.
Marvel Studios is officially releasing an MCU Timeline book later this year. Hopefully, that will help us understand this precarious positioning of the movies better.
