Every action genre fan has seen the Die Hard franchise and loved it. But now, its lead actor Bruce Willis will be retiring from his acting career after being diagnosed with aphasia.
But what if we told you that Bruce Willis had made history by being the first actor to continue starring on screen after his retirement?
Earlier this year, the actor informed his fans that he would take leave from the acting industry due to an aphasia diagnosis. The diagnosis led to his decision to end his career since his ability to memorize or recite scripts was hampered due to the illness.
Devastated, fans had no hopes of seeing the actor on screen again, but Bruce Willis has given his audiences new hope of seeing his legacy live on even after his retirement.
According to The Telegraph, Willis has officially sold his likeness to Deepcake, an AI company dealing with deepfake technology. Deepfake tech has come in handy in bringing alive deceased Hollywood icons on screen again and is the future of AI in filmmaking.
With the use of deepfake tech, Deepcake has obtained the right to make a “digital twin” of Willis for use on the screen.
Willis has already had a taste of this new technique of keeping his acting career alive by starring in a MegaFone commercial in 2021, his face superimposed onto another performer’s, and he never had to be on set for it. It remains unclear if Deepcake has exclusive rights over the actor’s likeness or if his estate will dictate it in the future.
Willis is the first Hollywood actor to consent to use his likeness to be used by filmmakers via deepfake technology, despite ethical ambiguities surrounding the practice. We have already seen the use of this technology in several Star Wars projects. Still, Willis’ move is uncharted territory in the acting industry and will open new paths for filmmaking in the future.
