Jerry Maguire Sequel is the Tidwells’ Story: Cameron Crowe

Jerry Maguire is one of the most popular romantic comedies of all time, and now the film’s director has revealed what his idea of a sequel would be. Although a sequel is not in the cards at the moment, Cameron Crowe has stated that Jerry Maguire 2 would revolve around Rod Tidwell and his wife, Marcee, the characters played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Regina King.

Jerry Maguire, released in 1996, centered on Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise), a sports agent, who gets fired from his old agency. He decides to start his own agency and struggles to retain his only client, football player Rodney Tidwell. He begins a relationship with his accountant, a single mother called Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), and tries to balance his professional and personal life.

Crowe has mentioned that if a sequel does ever happen and he is involved in the production, the story would take focus on the Tidwells. Collider asked the director about Jerry Maguire 2, and he stated that he was approached to make Jerry Maguire into a television show. About the second part, he said:

“I just feel like Jerry Maguire, if there was ever going to be a continuing story about Jerry Maguire, I always thought it should be about the Tidwells. I always thought it should be Marcee and Rod. From time to time, people have called up and said ‘We want to do a TV show of Jerry Maguire,’ and I’ll say, ‘You know, I think that story continues with the Tidwells,’ and they never call back. You don’t want to see Regina King do Marcee Tidwell? I’d do that in a second.”

With The Karate Kid and Star Wars franchises coming back as very successful television shows, there might be hope for a great Jerry Maguire series. But should a chance be taken with another classic? The history of franchises returning with a not-so-good sequel is greater than that of successful ones.
