CEO of Legendary Confirms ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ Will Have Sequels

CEO of Legendary Entertainment, Joshua Grode, said that the production company has future plans for the MonsterVerse.

The franchise crossovers famous movie monsters like Godzilla, King Kong, and Mothra. It got its start with 2014’s Godzilla and was followed by three other films, among which is the recently released Godzilla vs. Kong, which brought back new life to the declining franchise.

Now, Deadline has reported that Grode recently confirmed the company is looking into new ideas set in the MonsterVerse. He spoke about the unexpected success of Godzilla vs. Kong, which is performing spectacularly in terms of box-office gains to this day. Grode also reassured fans that there would be more installments in the franchise stating they “have a number of ideas.”

Furthermore, earlier this month, Max Borenstein, the screenwriter of Godzilla vs. Kong, also discussed the future of the MonsterVerse in an interview with Collider.

Considering the current situation, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its coinciding release on HBO Max posed a big hurdle for the release of Godzilla vs. Kong. However, the concerns have been negated as the movie seems to be still going strong both in theatres and on the streaming platform.

It also surpassed the success of big blockbuster releases like Tenet and Wonder Woman: 1984, which premiered in theatres last year. Coming to the streaming service platform, Godzilla vs. Kong beat Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which set a new viewership record on HBO Max.

Given the film’s success, not only has it assured an expectant future for theatrical releases, but it has also garnered a renewed interest in the MonsterVerse franchise. Since Toho, the Japanese company behind Godzilla’s creation, has only produced one new live-action movie for the franchise in the past decade, the MonsterVerse has been the go-to hub of all Kaiju fans.

However, the future of the franchise was questionable before the release of Godzilla vs. Kong. Its prequel, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, was a commercial flop and received both mixed and negative reviews from critics.

But given the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, it only makes sense that the studio should continue with the franchise. With many more monsters yet to be featured, here’s hoping that the future of the MonsterVerse gets brighter than ever.

About Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong is an American kaiju-action movie. It is a sequel to Godzilla: King of Monsters and Kong: Skull Island and is the latest entry in the WB-Legendary Monsterverse. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and others.

Godzilla vs. Kong took in $285 million in just 12 days in theatres. As of now, it has grossed over $400 million, becoming the most successful movie in the pandemic era to date.

Humans have captured King Kong from Skull Island to help him find his true home. With them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But Kong’s return comes just in time for Godzilla cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. As the fearsome monsters square off in an epic battle for the ages, humanity looks to wipe out both of them and take back the planet once and for all.
