Daley and Goldstein Discuss Chances of Dungeons & Dragons Sequel

Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein addressed the chances of a sequel to their upcoming movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, in a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.

The first film, Dungeons & Dragons, based on the Wizards of the Coast tabletop RPG, was released in 2000. But unfortunately, it was a box-office failure. However, despite this, two direct-to-video Dungeons & Dragons sequels were also released, with Bruce Payne’s Damodar being the sole connective thread.

The upcoming film, Honor Among Thieves, is a reboot of the Dungeons & Dragons film franchise. It follows the titular group of ragtag cohorts trying to recover a valuable artifact they delivered to the wrong person, who wishes to use it for unfair means.

The film features an ensemble cast including Chris Pine as team leader and Bard Edgin, Michelle Rodriguez as Barbarian Holga, Regé-Jean Page as Paladin Xenk, Justice Smith as Sorcerer Simon, Sophia Lillis as Tiefling Druid Doric, and Hugh Grant as Rogue Forge Fitzwilliam.

In a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Collider interviewed the creative team behind the film. Daley and Goldstein confirmed that though there is no immediate pressure from Paramount Studios to build a universe, they may have ideas for potential sequels. Check out the statement below.

“There was no pressure put on us to think in terms of a cinematic universe. We obviously wanted to create characters and an environment that could grow and that had the potential for more films, but that wasn’t at all in the forefront of our approach to this.”

Goldstein

“By the way, that’s a testament to the studios because I think sometimes the studios put the cart before the horse and try to create these cinematic universes before the first movie even comes out. So I think they were smart and savvy enough to know that the first one’s got to work before you even dive into the others. That said, I think it’s a really good jumping-off point for a lot of other potential movies to come after it.”

In today’s day and age, the superhero genre is arguably the most successful in the market. Many studios have tried to gain similar success by following the path of interconnected storytelling of DC and Marvel.

Since Paramount is already tasting success with most of its existing projects, such as Top Gun, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek, they do not need to pressurize Daley and Goldstein to build a Dungeons & Dragons Cinematic Universe immediately.

We have to wait for Honor Among Thieves to hit screens to see if we could hope for a sequel. The box-office verdict of the upcoming fantasy film will play a huge role in making the decisions about sequels.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will release in theaters on March 3, 2023.
