‘Citizen Kane’ Loses Legendary 100% Rating Due to 80-year-old Review

Citizen Kane’s 100% rating score on Rotten Tomatoes has come down due to an eighty-year-old negative review. The movie, which is often considered to be the greatest film ever made, was directed by Orson Welles, who also starred in it, and continues to be culturally relevant and significant to this day.

However, now its long-held accolade has been tarnished by a review published in Chicago Daily Tribune (now known as Chicago Tribune), which dates back to 1941.

The critic Mae Tinee wrote, “In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But it’s the sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment.”

Netflix’s Mank, which came out last year and starred Gary Oldman in the role of Herman J Mankiewicz, helped renew the interest of today’s audience to Citizen Kane and started many Reddit discussions online.

The David Fincher-directed movie mainly focuses on the writing of the film as well as the relationship between Mank and media mogul William Randolph Hearst, who was the inspiration for Kane.

As a tribute to the audiovisual styling of the forties, Mank went on to be nominated for ten Academy Awards and won in the categories of Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

But to be fair, the movie’s dip in ratings doesn’t necessarily bear down on its lasting legacy. Nevertheless, dissension amongst its usual praise does come off as interesting. Currently, it stands at a 99% score and has tied with movies like It Happened One Night (1934), Casablanca (1942), and Lady Bird (2017).
