One Cares About The End Of The World In Don’t Look Up Trailer

It’s the end of the world, but our fellow humans couldn’t care less about it.

Seems bizarre, right? Well, that’s the premise of Adam McKay’s upcoming satire feature, Don’t Look Up.

Netflix has released the official trailer for the film, and it features a star-studded, chaotic cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.

The film’s logline sums it up perfectly, “Two astronomers go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. The response from a distracted world: Meh.”

The trailer opens with DiCaprio and Lawrence’s characters in a state of panic as they find out a “planet-killer” meteor is heading towards Earth.

The title cards hilariously read, “Based on real events… that haven’t happened… yet,” as the astronomers go to the president (Meryl Streep) and other influential people with a high reach as they react to the situation as if it’s a no big deal.

The duo goes to different media outlets and celebrities, only to be ignored/made fun of after warning people about the world’s end.

The clip shows how absurd it all truly is when politicians discuss the monetary “value” of the meteor as the astronomer again points out the world is ending.

The ridiculousness of the whole event is highlighted even more than the first teaser did, where Jonah Hill’s character casually mentions, “Drought, famine, hole in the ozone. It’s so boring.”

The satire film acts as a commentary on real-world climate emergencies. Leaders around the world often take these warning signs lightly or make fake promises about which are eventually forgotten before it’s time to garner votes during the next election.

At one point in the trailer, we see a clip of Streep’s President walking on stage, presumably, during an election campaign. But the whole mood of the trailer by then makes the viewer feel like time is running out.

The new trailer also gives us a better look at the rest of the stellar cast including, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Tyler Perry, Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, Kid Cudi, and Ron Perlman.

McKay described it best when talking to Deadline – the film focuses on how political views, opinion, and conspiracy theories affect the way people everywhere have very polarized, emotional reactions instead of being rational even in times of urgent crisis.

The only reason I think that hopefully, people will like this movie is because the shared experience is one of complete chaos and fractures, and that’s really the premise of our movie. The shared experience of the movie is that we’re not having a shared experience right now.

Don’t Look Up will be available in select theaters starting December 10 and will come to Netflix just two weeks later, on December 24.
