All the Easter Eggs Spotted in Halo Ep 3

Three episodes may not seem like a long wait, but for Cortana’s fans, her introduction into the Halo TV series has been met with a “finally!” Episode 3 also laid out some more groundwork—we got a flashback into Makee’s childhood and why she’s working with the Covenant, plus a spread of game lore that shows us that the writers have been doing their due research.

There’s no doubt Cortana stole the spotlight, but I’ve collected a few scenes/references in the episode that you may want to take a second look at. Here are all the Easter eggs spotted in Halo Ep 3:

1. Makee’s Backstory in Oban

Just like Madrigal, Oban too is an actual planet from the games (Halo 4). It’s a planet where human refugees took shelter after the war with the Covenant.

Makee

On the contrary, the show makes Oban a “UEG Tier 2 Waste Salvage Colony,” with shocking visuals to match it. The UNSC gets hated on for good reasons, but even the depiction of how brutal they are on Oban is just hard to watch.

In Makee’s flashback, we see that she grew up on this terrible planet, and so when the Covenant came and discovered that she was the “Blessed One,” she was all too happy to serve with their “religion.”

Another reference that Makee makes is claiming to the UNSC that she was kidnapped from the planet Circumstance, which appears in Halo: Contact Harvest and Halo: Reach.

Makee is an original character developed for the series, the other side of the same coin as Master Chief—two Blessed Ones with very different agendas.

In this episode, Makee is also shown to kill her human brethren with no remorse, yet hangs around with her romance novel, The Dawn of Angels, like a human-sympathizer.

Expect interesting things from her!

2. Halo’s Mysterious Object

The Halo device that Master Chief brought back from Madrigal (the same one he can activate and has immense powers) was studied once again this episode.

The UNSC labeled it as something that is over 100,000 years old, pre-human, and also probably pre-Covenant.

In short, it’s trying to say that it belongs to the Forerunners. The device is a key that will activate the Halos and decimate all sentient life… but I won’t spoil this lore for you, as I’m sure the show is going to deal with it in the coming episodes.

3. Halsey’s Flash Clones

Halsey’s passion project seems to be this really icky medical procedure called flash cloning. While flash cloning organs fared relatively well, flash cloning humans was a tedious process that resulted in several impairments or/and death of the clone.

Dr. Halsey

In the games, kidnapped kids are flash-cloned so that they can be made into Spartans.

After finally manipulating a go-ahead for the project, Halsey’s flash clone sees the light of day in Episode 3.

4. The Lekgolo v/s UNSC

After Makee’s call with the UNSC gets them to walk into her trap, the “Hunters” are introduced.

I apologize if you were snacking on something while watching this scene, because the next thing you see up close is that the Hunters are actually made up of thousands of worms, also known as the Lekgolo.

When the UNSC and Hunters clash, the show brings out another Easter egg in the form of the iconic battle rifle from Halo 2.

5. The Cole Protocol

So, other than the Halo artifacts and Blessed Ones, the Covenant is also on the hunt for large human settlements, like Earth. To protect humans, the Cole Protocol was initiated that kept these locations a constant secret from the Covenant.

In Episode 3, the show does not mention the Cole Protocol by name but does imply the same when the UNSC Captain tells Makee they don’t have the information about Earth’s location.

6. Bonus: Master Chief’s Party Trick

Master Chief

In the Halo novels, Master Chief has this cool (if rather, odd) talent to flip a coin and detect which side it would fall on before it even landed. This was actually to portray how amazing his visual abilities were.

He doesn’t show off this talent, but he does play around with a coin this episode, and I have a feeling it was an indirect nod to Chief’s canon.
