What If…? Could Get Live-Action Spinoffs In MCU’s Main Continuity

Marvel’s Disney+ animated series, What If…?, will see new possibilities in the form of live-action spinoffs. As such things tend to happen when there’s a multiverse, chances of getting new stories of the same beloved characters are always on the table.

Executive producer Brad Winderbaum told Inverse that the stories from the series could become live-action eventually, and that he was hoping to explore more future possibilities.

We wanted each story to be able to be open and shut in that half an hour timeframe, but it’s hard not to imagine more chapters with some of these characters. I hope that one day we do get to see more adventures in some of these alternate timelines.

Winderbaum also pointed out that many stories in the What If…? comics have already made their way to the main MCU timeline, hinting that that could happen with the series as well.

All you have to do to prove that is look back at how many stories from the What If…? comics ended up in the main continuity of the comic universe. My prediction is a similar thing could happen on the cinematic side as well.

What If…? will explore an alternate timeline where Peggy Carter takes the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, Black Panther flies away in a spaceship with Yondu, as well as zombies creeping up and coming back from the dead. The series will really have you wondering, ‘What If…?’

Marvel’s first dive into animation, the series will run wild with its concepts and bring comics to life in a different form.

The studio seems to be having a ball as WandaVision, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier scored multiple Emmy nominations this year. Loki became MCU’s most acclaimed series yet, ending with an explosion into the multiverse, setting up multiple Phase 4 stories.

The most plausible story to jump to the live-action side seems to be Peggy’s Captain Carter as fans were quick to spot an easter egg in Loki where a woman who looked like Agent Carter was seen in the background at the TVA.

If rumors were to be trusted, Hayley Atwell will supposedly make an appearance as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

What If…? will premiere on Disney+ from August 11, 2021.

What If…? is an American animated anthology series created by A.C. Bradley for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name.

It explores what would happen if major moments from the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) occurred differently.

The series is produced by Marvel Studios, their first animated series since becoming their own production company. Bradley serves as head writer of the series, with Bryan Andrews directing.

Jeffrey Wright stars as the Watcher, who narrates the series. By September 2018, Marvel Studios was developing a number of series for Disney+, and one based on the What If…? comic was first reported in March 2019.
