Tony Gilroy Talks About the Time Jumps in Andor Season 2

Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy explains the number of time jumps that will feature in the upcoming season 2 of Andor. The time jumps will span over 12 episodes and will vary with regards to time.

The latest Star Wars series is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and focuses on Cassian Andor in his early days of joining the Rebellion. Season 1 ended with Luthen Rael recruiting Cassian Andor into the Rebel Alliance. Season 2 will follow Cassian as he prepares himself to become a leader. The events of season 2 will directly lead the audience into the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In a conversation with Deadline, series creator Tony Gilroy explains the multiple time jumps coming up in season 2 and how the show will deal with them, eventually leading to Rogue One.

Gilroy reveals that season 2 will kick off a year after the uprising in Ferrix that was featured in the season 1 finale. The time jumps after that will vary in length of time, from a few days to a year.

Read Gilroy’s entire statement below –

“So, when we come back for our second half, it’ll be a year later. An entire year will have gone on. All kinds of things will have happened, and we’ll pick up the show; sometimes we’ll do a week, we’ll do three days, we’ll do four days, whatever, and then we’ll drop a year in between.”

Season 2 will span across four years, beginning in 4BBY and ending in 0BBY. While season 1 largely focused on the events leading to the finale’s uprising in Ferrix, season 2 will document the events leading to Rogue One.

A month ago, the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon featured similar time jumps, covering 19 years of history within a span of ten episodes. Though the series was well received by the audience, many criticized the controversial time jumps as it made it difficult to connect with the characters.

Fans further pointed out that many important events and milestones were omitted from the series owing to the massive time jumps, which could have otherwise further fleshed out the story and its characters.

With Andor season 2 having an almost similar structure in the context of the time jumps, fans are worried about the series suffering due to these uneven jumps. Season 2 will be the final season.

Season 2 will include further information about the Rebel Alliance and Cassian’s first meeting with K-2SO. However, Andor season 2 will cover a time period much shorter compared to House of the Dragon season 1. So, it might be able to avoid the criticisms that HOTD faced.

Moreover, Andor season 2 will also not have to deal with the recasting of characters, which makes things even simpler. The show also has a narrative structure where every three episodes will focus on a certain arc.

This will make it simpler for the audience to follow the show and understand how one episode connects to another. In other words, Andor season 2 has little chance of disappointing fans at least as far as the structure is concerned.

No official release date for Andor season 2 has been announced yet. As per Gilroy’s previous comments, it will not arrive earlier than 2024. Though the wait seems long, it will hopefully be worth it.
