Will There Be a Seinfeld Reboot? Jerry Says No!

All nine seasons of Seinfeld are being released on Netflix today, October 1. But that’s all you’re going to get, as creator Jerry Seinfeld has point-blank refuted any chances of a reboot.

Many popular shows of the yesteryears are making a comeback in some form or the other—choosing to have reboots, revivals, or reunions, whichever goes best with their story.

Any of the above three are certainly options for the immensely successful comedy series Seinfeld, which started its first run in 1989. Jerry Seinfeld played a fictionalized version of himself, alongside Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Michael Richards.

But he concurs that any of the approaches would be “sad” as it would point to the fact that the creators couldn’t come up with anything new, fresh, or original.

The show was never one to follow conventional practices, and along with its whacky storylines and quirky characters, its series finale is a testament to that. (Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you!)

A reboot or a revival would have to accommodate the two decades that have gone by for the characters. This would not only take the magic away but also risks tarnishing its existing legacy in case a reboot is poorly executed/received.

A reunion is no-can-do for the show as well. While a reunion may give them the chance of winning the Emmy it had lost out on all those years ago, the creator notes that that’s not how awards work.

Seinfeld is often called a “show about nothing,” but here’s how Jerry Seinfeld would put it himself:

I think the show was about having fun and making fun of ordinary things, of life. It’s relatable, but there’s an obsessive, neurotic, New York quality that takes it to another level.

The world has changed a lot since Seinfeld went off the air. But its relevance and comic appeal have remained stable throughout, garnering a newer generation of fans. The same was evidenced by its streaming popularity when it was available on Hulu.

With a new run on Netflix, the show is bound to be “revived” in its own unique way.
