The 101 Dalmatians prequel will star Emma Stone as the iconic villainess in the years before she became renowned for kidnapping the spotted furry friends. The crime comedy film is a root story of sorts that will observe Cruella de Vil during her initial years as a fashion designer in London.

During that time, Cruella becomes smitten with dog skins, eventually turning into the legendary Disney villain.

Stone will be taking over for Glenn Close, who played Cruella in the 1996 live-action adaptation film and its sequel. Stone will star alongside Emma Thompson as the Baroness, the head of a prestigious fashion house in London. Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong are also set to star.

Craig Gillespie is overseeing the project. His previous feature film I, Tonya bagged several Oscar nominations in 2018.

A new poster was published on the official Twitter account of Cruella, cheering fans with a wry, “Hello, cruel world.”

The post also announced that a new trailer will launch sometime tomorrow and gave the first look at Stone’s high-fashion character in the flesh.

Rumors whirled late last year that Cruella could also hit Disney+ as the moviegoing industry’s situation continues to remain in flux. The film is still scheduled to release on May 28, as Disney chooses its next move. Disney may wait at least a few more weeks to decide on the film’s release. However, it appears that the studio is set on the May release date.

Since Raya and the Last Dragon is set to premiere in March via the streamer’s Premier Access platform, the studio could be waiting to see how that film performs before they make a final judgment.

Nonetheless, Disney is probably hoping that a trailer will excite interest. Cruella is the first significant film by Emma Stone since Zombieland: Double Tap failed to make ripples in 2019. Prior to that, Stone featured in The Favourite, the film that won the actress her second acting nomination at the Academy Awards.

Stone’s retrieval with Cruella is a thrilling one and hopefully, the film and her performance can garner the fame it deserves.

About Cruella

Cruella is a 2021 American crime comedy film based on the character Cruella de Vil, introduced in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians and Walt Disney’s 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

The live-action adaptation stars Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone as Cruella, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong in supporting roles. A sequel is in development at Disney.

Set amidst 1970s London during the punk rock revolution, Estella (Stone) moves to the bustling city with dreams of establishing herself as a fashion force. However, when she catches the eye of celebrated designer Baroness von Hellman, Estella unleashes her fiery inner persona to get ahead. With her thief friends by her side, Estella’s ambitions will take a sinister turn when she gets obsessed with Dalmatian furs and becomes the antagonistic villain of the original Disney movie.

In August 2021, it has been confirmed that Emma Stone will be returning for a sequel with Craig Gillespie and Tony McNamara, the first film’s director and writer respectively. No other cast, release date or plot details have been revealed.
