Dan Harmon, the creator of the popular sitcom, Community, shared a new, exciting update about the status of the oft-rumored Community movie, hinting that it might be happening soon.
The NBC show is one of the most-loved American sitcoms of the current generation with a loyal fanbase. The show is often appreciated for its meta humor and pop-culture references. Though the series struggled for ratings during its run, it never lost its fanbase.
Due to low ratings, NBC initially canceled Community after five seasons. However, giving in to popular demand, Yahoo took up the show for one last season with 13 episodes. The show did not return for Season 7, but fans have been demanding a reunion since its end.
Earlier this month, Alison Brie, who played Annie Edison in the series, shared that “there’s been some talks” about a potential Community movie. Weeks after Brie’s statement, creator Dan Harmon himself opened up about the rumored film.
Harmon shared a positive update about the rumored movie in an interview with The Wrap. He shared that Brie’s comments were legitimate and that “conversations and agreements” were on the way. Check out his entire statement below.
“I’ll confirm what Alison said which is that legitimacy is here, conversations and agreements are happening. There’s a story—who knows if we’ll end up sticking to it, but it was something we had to compile in order to take it out and court various venues. And now negotiations happen. Now, I say that with such caution because sometimes the audience is like, ‘So that means what a year, two years?’ I could have said what I just said three years ago, and it would have been almost as accurate; and can you imagine if I had said that three years ago? That’s me setting people up for three years of abusive neglect and making them feel forgotten, and it’s hard enough to just say nothing. When you put the percentage chances together, it’s like you have to account for maybe the world blowing up or another virus happening. But as far as the industry is concerned, this is a matter of when and not if, for sure.”
However, as Harmon explained, just because talks are on the way, fans should not expect the film to happen within a specific time frame. Though negotiations are on, nothing has been confirmed yet or declared officially.
Community has been streaming on Netflix since 2020 and has gained a large international audience in this time. So, Netflix could also be a potential distributor for the upcoming movie, if and when it does end up happening.
The bigger question is whether all the original cast members would return for the film. Even if the original cast agrees to come on board, filming might take a while as most cast members have gone on to lead other films and shows and might have prior engagements.
Nevertheless, even if it takes a few years for the film to happen, it will be a win for fans loyal to the sitcom. Let’s hope everything works out, and we soon get an official announcement.
