After a decade of being haunted by its own failed attempts, development for The Haunted Mansion reboot is gaining pace. The latest addition to the cast is Danny DeVito.
The Haunted Mansion takes after the Disney amusement park ride of the same name that has its visitors go through the scary house resided in by 999 happy haunts.
DeVito will be playing the role of a smug professor — but whether he is of the living realm or not, has not been disclosed. The film itself is set to follow a mother and son who come across a mansion filled with mysteries.
They try to seek help from an eccentric set of characters: a tour guide (LaKeith Stanfield), a psychic (played by Tiffany Haddish), a priest, and a historian who will guide them through their misadventures.
Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson are also attached to the movie but their roles are undisclosed.
The original movie, which came out in 2003, was a disappointment to all — the box office, audience, and critics. Talks of a PG-13 reboot started out in 2010. From being helmed by Oscar-nominated Guillermo del Toro to direct and having Ryan Gosling as the lead, the film went through quite the journey.
Finally, in 2020, Katie Dippold (writer and co-producer of Parks and Recreation) was called in to write the script. Justin Simien would direct with Dan Lin and Jonathan producing under the banner of Rideback, alongside Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The Hollywood Reporter has stated that filming has already begun in New Orleans and Atlanta. Hopefully, this means there are no more setbacks to the decade-long project.
While the original may not have been a hit, the cast and crew on board (now joined by DeVito’s comedic prowess) does make for a promising, fun watch!
The Haunted Mansion does not have a release date as of yet.
