Dave Meltzer Unveils The Secret Behind WWE’s Ticket-Selling Formula

John Cena is WWE’s biggest star, ever, and it is obvious by how well the tickets sell whenever he is featuring.

There might be many ways to interpret the ratings for Monday Night Raw, Friday Night SmackDown, and even AEW Dynamite. In any case, ticket sales are what they are, especially since it’s public knowledge how many were purchased and how many were distributed for free.

The secondary market provides insight into a show’s likely performance in a market before pay-per-views and live events. Bray Wyatt teased a possible return to WWE on Twitter, for instance, which spiked demand for Hell In A Cell tickets on the secondary market. While that didn’t happen, Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins still delivered an all-time great performance.

Not many wrestlers can boast the ticket-selling prowess of Cena, moving ticket sales up by thousands. Even Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar  are no match to Cena’s ticket-selling superpower.

In the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer outlined Cena’s impact on Raw. Read the excerpt below:

“Cena is still the one proven major live ticket mover left. They announced on Raw on 6/6 that Cena would return on the 6/27 Raw in Laredo TX. Over the next six days, tickets for that show went from 3,726 to 5,080 and is now at 5,154.”

Cena’s 20th anniversary is being celebrated on Raw on July 27, so the public’s attention is warranted. In spite of some of the tickets being sold to scalpers, Meltzer pointed out that, from an interest standpoint, it’s still a good sign for the show. In the event of 2,000 unsold tickets for a show, they can’t capitalize on it at all.

Cena and WWE have yet to announce their plans for this show, but there might be a number of tricks up their sleeves.

It might be just a quick promotion for The Face That Runs The Place during the broadcast, but that is an underutilization of Cena’s return.

In 2017, Reigns took to Facebook to post a cryptic message to Cena, writing “Acknowledge” to go along him with for finishing their match at No Mercy. The two have hinted at a match at SummerSlam, however recent reports indicate that WWE has cooled on this idea.

Given the fact that Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton are both injured, it seems likely that Cena would find something a little bigger at the Biggest Party Of The Summer.

Although not much can be said about what will happen when Cena shows up this time, WWE wouldn’t need to worry about their ticket sales for the match.
