DC Villain Black Mask Introduced in Latest ‘Batwoman’ Preview

A new Batwoman season 2 video offers a first look at Black Mask, the DC Comics villain who will play a major role in the rest of season 2.

The CW has disclosed a new preview for “Rule #1”, the ninth episode of Batwoman‘s second season. Episode nine is believed to feature a major pivoting point for Ryan Wilder, played by Javicia Leslie, particularly interesting after the fierce events of this week’s “Survived Much Worse.”

Ryan now seems to have a remedy for her Kryptonite injury, thanks to a Desert Rose flower that grew out of her trusty plant. She will now be turning her focus to Gotham’s “biggest foe,” Black Mask. It was verified last year that the villain would be one of the primary antagonists of season 2. Though we haven’t seen him in person yet, we have seen the impacts of his False Face Society circulating drugs throughout Gotham City.

In season 2, episode 8, “Survived Much Worse,” Alice, Ryan, Sophie, and Jacob all end up on the island of Cortana, where they think Kate is being held captive. Nonetheless, Cortana’s queen, Safiyah, tells Alice that Kate was never there. Mary and Luke learn that Kate didn’t survive the plane crash shown in the season 2 premiere back in Gotham.

However, in reality, she did survive and will, in fact, play a big part in the rest of the season, with Wallis Day portraying an altered version of Kate. The rest of season 2 will also focus on the villain Black Mask, as disclosed before the premiere. Showrunner Caroline Dries verified Black Mask is the False Face Society leader who will face off Batwoman.

Recently, in a new promo for Batwoman released by The CW (via TV Promos), viewers have received a first look at Black Mask in action. The video concentrates largely on Ryan and her ex-girlfriend Angelique, but Black Mask does emerge briefly.

However, it’s difficult to tell more from this one-shot. The villain’s mask seems to be fairly comic-accurate. Batwoman season 2 brought in another well-known villain from the comics, Victor Zsasz. That character was extremely intimidating and a dangerous opponent for Ryan. All hints point to Black Mask being the same.

About Batwoman

Batwoman is an American superhero television series developed by Caroline Dries for The CW. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, it is part of The CW’s Arrowverse stories.

In the aftermath of Batman’s disappearance, Kate Kane must overcome her demons to protect Gotham City by donning the avatar of Batwoman. After Bruce Wayne’s cousin Kate Kane becomes Batwoman in the first season, the series focuses on former convict Ryan Wilder as she protects Gotham City in the role of Batwoman when Kate disappears in the second season.

In the third season, Batwoman continues to keep the streets of Gotham safe while Batwing joins in on the action.
