After The Batman and The Flash, Batgirl to Film in Glasgow This November

Glasgow? More like Gotham City!

Another DC film is going to turn the streets of Glasgow into Gotham. The fictional city is the primary setting of various DC Comics and movie adaptations, including Batman, Joker, and Birds of Prey.

Now the upcoming Batgirl film will also be set in Gotham, so naturally, Glasgow was the place to go.

According to Glasgow Live, pre-production on the upcoming DCEU film began this week, with principal footage taking place in November.

Directing duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are in the city scouting out locations ahead of the shoot. Adil El Arbi posted a story to his Instagram account, sharing a photo of the pair at Glasgow Airport.

The director also posted a hilarious meme about how hard it is to understand the Glaswegian accent.

Production designer Christopher Glass posted another photo with the duo:

Leslie Grace will take on the role of Gotham’s young female vigilante Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon. She is the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon.

J.K. Simmons, who previously appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League as Commissioner Gordon, will reprise the role for the film.

Glasgow has recently been the central location for the production of other DC films like The Flash and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, both transforming the city into Gotham.

The city has been the hotspot for Hollywood films, including the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, with Marvel’s Secret Invasion to supposedly film somewhere in Scotland. The show’s co-director Thomas Bezucha has been scouting for location sites.

DCEU’s Batgirl will have an exclusive HBO Max release as a part of Warner Bros’ deal to make ten DC projects for the streamers.

Batgirl does not have a release date yet but is expected to premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2022.

About Batgirl

Batgirl was an upcoming superhero film in the DC Extended Universe. It was supposed to have an exclusive debut on HBO Max sometime in 2022-23 and was slated to be directed by Adil Al Arbi and Bilall Fallah (previously worked on Ms Marvel) with a screenplay by Christina Hodson (screenwriter for Birds of Prey). Kristin Burr was listed as the producer.

In July 2021, it was confirmed that Leslie Grace will be playing Batgirl/Barbara Gordon. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, Warner Bros. announced in 2022 that the upcoming film has been cancelled.
