Did Luke Skywalker Know about Ahsoka Tano?

The lives of Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano may be bound together by none other than Darth Vader himself—father to one and master to the other.

But no two lives have been set as far apart in the decades-old Star Wars franchise as those of Luke and Ahsoka. That is, until recently, when the internet was abuzz with stories of Luke and Ahsoka’s worlds finally merging together.

However, the rumor mill has long been churning stories of Luke and Ahsoka’s first meeting for a while now. It was set into motion once again after a peculiar incident in July this year when Luke refused to recognise Ahsoka!

1. Why Did Luke Say He Didn’t Know Ahsoka?

On July 3, 2020, a fan asked Mark Hamill (the actor who played Luke) on Twitter how much he liked Ahsoka Tano and interestingly, Hamill replied, “I’m sorry, but don’t know what Ahsoka Tano is.”

Many fans expressed shock at the statement given the well-established importance of Ahsoka’s character, especially in the animated spin-off, Clone Wars.

But more than anything, the shock was in knowing that had things turned out even slightly different, Ahsoka would have been like an aunt to Luke.

Obviously, Hamill was only joking. The very next day, he tweeted on July 4:

So, was this outrageous “joke” really just a lighthearted dig at the distant relationship of the two characters so close to Anakin Skywalker before he goes down the dark path as Darth Vader? Or was it yet another sign of an upcoming meeting of Luke and Ahsoka?

2. Did Ahsoka Ever Teach Luke?

The possibility that Luke knows Ahsoka was first teased in the book The Secrets of the Jedi. In it, Luke Skywalker tells the stories of the great leaders of the Jedi Order, their teachings, and their history.

In fact, the book features an encyclopedia of sorts compiled by Luke, of all the great warriors of the light saber.

This encyclopedia has an unexpected entry by the name of Ahsoka Tano! The entry clearly denotes that despite never being crowned a Jedi or having wielded a light saber, Ahsoka inspired greatness in others.

Luke also mentions that Ahsoka was his father’s Padawan and extremely skilled.

The entry also includes the story of Ahsoka’s past when she is framed for bombing the Jedi Temple by a very close friend.

This is the incident which finally results in Ahsoka walking away from the Jedi Order to create her own path and picking up the pseudonym, Fulcrum.

While the entry is kept short and without any personal connection to Luke, it sure confirms the fact that Luke knew of Ahsoka and how close she had been to his father.

So, who could have given him that kind of info? Could it be Ahsoka herself?

Now there are clues in the movies too. The peculiar rise in Luke’s powers in between his crushing failure in The Empire Strikes Back and a year later in Return of the Jedi seem to suggest an unusual occurrence.

Is it possible he met Ahsoka during this time and learned some of his father’s secrets, explaining his eventual confidence as a Jedi?

We were told that during this time, Luke had visited “other worlds” to learn lightsaber combat. Could one of those worlds have inhabited Ahsoka?

That brings us to the next question you may have.

3. Do Luke and Ahsoka Ever Meet?

If I haven’t already established the special connect between Luke and Ahsoka, here is another crucial tidbit.

After Darth Vader turned himself over to the dark side, ‘killing’ Anakin in the process, there were only two people who could bring back Anakin. You guessed it—Ahsoka and Luke. No one else. In the entire galaxy.

There is a good possibility that Ahsoka and Luke met sometime between Episode VI and Episode VII.

But the fact remains that there is no concrete proof of Ahsoka and Luke ever meeting in flesh.

Alas, all those possibilities of Tano training Luke to face Darth Vader and Luke using Ahsoka’s help to start an academy for the new Order, remain just castles in the air.

Despite living in the days when Luke was training to become a Jedi and fight Darth Vader, Ahsoka does not help Luke.

This was particularly ensured by Ahsoka’s despise for the Jedi Order after she was falsely accused of murder and the Order refused to believe her.

Although Anakin ensured she was proven innocent, something broke inside of her ever since.

Famously nicknamed “Snips” by Anakin, Ahsoka was one of the first characters to step away from the Order and live on her own for the longest time.

In fact, until the Star Wars animated movie and series Clone Wars came out, Ahsoka remained a mysterious character. She was always behind the curtains. Just a whisper here and there, inspiring the Rebels along the way!

4. When Tano Teased a Luke Moment

Tano makes the smallest appearance in The Rise of Skywalker, or at least her voice does.

When Rey is about to defeat Palpatine, she gathers strength from all the Jedi who came before her, such as Mace Windu and Yoda, and among the voices is Ahsoka Tano’s.

But we sure want more than such a passive nod to one of the galaxy’s bravest heroes!

Now we don’t know if that will ever happen, but we are being teased about this possibility a lot.

Back in 2018, there was an Instagram post by none other than Ahsoka Tano herself, that Luke and Ahsoka would meet one day.

But that was ages ago and as of now, Ashley Eckstein made it crystal clear that her only current involvement in Star Wars is voicing the former Jedi in the animated series Forces of Destiny. Disappointed? Well, you aren’t alone!

5. Why Is Ahsoka Such a Mystery?

Needless to say, Ahsoka is a major character in Anakin Skywalker’s life because she was his former Padawan before he turned to the Dark Side.

The last time fans saw Ahsoka was when she was in a face-off against her former master, Anakin Skywalker—now Darth Vader.

As the doors of the Sith temple closed on us, the question of whether Ahsoka lives or not broke the internet.

But besides the cliffhanger, there are other reasons Ahsoka is deemed the mystery woman of Star Wars.

As the only character in all of Star Wars that has spanned all eras of canon, besides the legends Palpatine and Anakin/Darth Vader, Ahsoka did not get her due recognition until she headlined Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Yet, there was very little known about her life between Order 66 (the Jedi Purge) and when she shows up as Fulcrum in Star Wars Rebels.

Even the Ahsoka novel continues a year after the finale of The Clone Wars and ends right before she starts her life as a Rebel spy.

The powerful and unique Ahsoka is a fan-favorite for a reason and the guys at Star Wars creative offices know this.

There are rumors she will appear in The Mandalorian season 2, but other than that, fans know little else in the absence of official confirmation.
