Andor, a Star Wars prequel, set five years before the events of the 2016 film Rogue One, premiered on Disney+ on September 21, 2022, with the first three episodes.
Following the twelve-part series premiere, lead actor Diego Luna confirmed that Andor would be his character’s last adventure and the end of Cassian’s story in the Star Wars franchise.
The series has already been renewed for Season 2. The first season will document a year in Cassian’s life, and the following one will cover the remaining four years. Apart from Diego Luna, the series also stars Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Fiona Shaw.
After Cassian Andor’s death at the end of Rogue One, fans were distraught by the fact that it may be impossible to see the return of one of their favorite characters. But come November 2018, hope was renewed when LucasFilm announced a series focusing on the fan-favorite character.
The news about the two confirmed seasons set a new hopeful fire ablaze in the hearts and minds of Star Wars fans. Maybe Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor will return beyond his solo series? But Luna has now put these whispered rumors to rest by confirming his step down from the role.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Diego Luna expressed his gratitude for getting to play this beloved character all these years. He said that though the journey was “beautiful,” it has come to an end.
For me, this is it. It’s a beautiful journey now that I have 24 episodes, twenty-four shorter films, to tell the story of where Cassian comes from and how he got to be the man we met in Rogue One.
Diego Luna has remained faithful to this character and his journey for a long time, and thus it makes sense that he bid adieu to Cassian Andor sooner or later.
The prequel series is a perfect way for Luna to say goodbye to Andor after portraying his story to the viewers who have shown him adoration all these years.
The spinoff series has already generated positive reviews, commending the actors on their performances and the writers for taking a unique take on the Star Wars storytelling formula. The show returns to Disney+ with weekly episodes every Wednesday, so stay tuned for Luna’s last adventure as Cassian Andor!
