Jurassic World Dominion Director Shares His Favorite Scene from the Movie

Despite disappointing reviews, the final installment of the Jurassic World trilogy—Jurassic World Dominion—hit theaters earlier this month, grossing approximately $462 million worldwide.

Following the suspenseful events of the second film, Dominion shows humanity’s struggle to survive in the face of the destruction of Isla Nublar, which resulted in the de-extinction of dinosaurs.

Trevorrow has remained closely involved in the Jurassic World trilogy ever since co-writing and directing the first Jurassic World film, which revived the beloved Jurassic Park franchise. Steven Spielberg, the critically acclaimed director behind the first two Jurassic Park films, reportedly provided Trevorrow with advice while drafting the scripts for both films.

In addition to reintroducing three of the franchise’s original stars (Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern) in Dominion, Spielberg reportedly stressed the importance of focusing on the human element of the story, keeping the characters relatable and ordinary while dealing with exceptional events.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Trevorrow broke down one of his “favorite” scenes from Jurassic World Dominion.

After surviving a plane crash, Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is seen hanging from the treetops of Biosyn Valley. A Therizinosaurus appears as Howard crawls through the undergrowth as it slowly approaches from behind, providing her with her first close encounter. One of the longest sequences from the film has Claire submerging herself in water as she’s being swept away by a dinosaur screeching against the surface.

Besides Howard, whose acting talent is evident in this scene, Dominion brings back Chris Pratt as Owen Brady, BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu, and Justice Smith as Franklin Webb. Since she was introduced as one of the stars of Jurassic World in 2015, Claire Dearing has displayed considerable character development. She has abandoned her infamous heels for a far more practical outfit to deal with the dangers of experimenting with the natural world.

Trevorrow’s own personal favorite scene shows how much Howard’s character is like Pratt—a gritty, fearless hero willing to do whatever it takes to survive and save humans as well as dinosaurs when the opportunity arises.

This trilogy is famous for its battles with prehistoric beasts, so it’s only fitting that Howard gets her own solo dinosaur scene after some much-deserved character development. Despite a lack of praise for Jurassic World Dominion, fans should note that Howard had a chance to shine on her own after so much of the initial spotlight was given to Pratt, particularly as the franchise’s old stars were invited to join in too.

Although some might fault Trevorrow for his conclusion to the Jurassic World story, it would be hard to criticize scenes that emulate the thrilling dinosaur stand-offs of the original films.
