Director Todd Phillips Confirms the Return of Joker 2 and Phoenix, Shares Details

Todd Phillips has confirmed that the script for Joker 2 is ready, with an Instagram photo of the cover and Joaquin Phoenix reading it.

Joker is a 2019 psychological-thriller film based on the DC supervillain of the same name. The movie was directed and produced by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver.

Joaquin Phoenix starred in the first Joker movie as Arthur Fleck, an unsuccessful comedian who falls into the rabbit hole of madness as Gotham City crumbles around him. The infamous DC Comics villain eventually takes his frustrations out on those who are leading society into decay.

The Joker cast also included Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron.

Critics gave the film mixed to positive reviews, but audiences liked the film and it was a box office smash, becoming the first R-rated film to gross over $1 billion worldwide.

Since the first Joker film came out, there have been whispers about a sequel, and now, there is finally a confirmation for it.

The first major update for Joker 2 is up on Todd Phillips’ Instagram page, amid rumors the sequel is moving forward at the studio. A photo of the script cover, as well as the actor reading the current draft of the script, has been shared by the director.

Phillips’ confirmation of Joker 2 comes a few days following a report indicating that the filmmaker was close to finishing the sequel on the heels of Warner Bros’ new CEO Michael De Luca in charge alongside former MGM executive Pamela Abdy.

The original Joker was not the biggest hit among critics, yet it resulted in 11 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Although Joker faced tough competition from Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, it managed to win the awards for Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.

In addition to the Joker 2 script, several exciting developments have been revealed for the sequel, including the return of Phoenix as the titular character and Scott Silver as the co-writer.

The script also gives hints as to what is to come, with its subtitle, “Folie à Deux”, which is an expression used for a mental disorder that affects two people or more, suggestings that multiple Jokers might appear in the film.

Willem Dafoe recently proposed the idea of a copycat Joker fighting Phoenix, and audiences were very enthusiastic about it.
