Disney to Prioritize Quality Over Quantity for Future Star Wars Films

Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, has revealed that Lucasfilm has been exercising prudence in its approach to Star Wars movies following the polarizing sequel trilogy and the commercial flop of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The company has dedicated its efforts to developing a range of popular Disney+ TV shows, such as The Mandalorian, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While there have been rumors of an increase in the production of Star Wars movies, recent cancellations of projects such as Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins and Kevin Feige’s Star Wars venture suggest otherwise.

In a recent Morgan Stanley conference ( by The Hollywood Reporter), Bob Iger revealed that Disney would be altering its approach by prioritizing quality over quantity.

The company plans to offer more substantial content, albeit at a slower pace.

Iger cited the success of the sequel trilogy but also acknowledged Solo’s underwhelming box-office performance. He admitted that the frequency of film releases might have been too aggressive and thus led to the decision to reduce the pace.

Iger emphasized that Lucasfilm is still developing Star Wars movies, but the upcoming film’s success is crucial. The company is cautious and will ensure they make the right movie.

This caution is a wise decision considering the importance of the next project in shaping the franchise’s future now that the nine-film Skywalker saga is over.

To minimize the pressure, the upcoming Star Wars movie will likely be a standalone feature rather than the start of a new trilogy or saga.

On the one hand, Lucasfilm’s streaming content is flourishing thanks to the recent success of Andor featuring Diego Luna and the latest installment of The Mandalorian.

These two shows follow the journeys of Din Djarin and the formidable youngling Grogu. Ashoka and Skeleton Crew will also come out this year, and they are expected to cross over with the Mandalorian and create a cohesive story.

Nevertheless, Disney and Lucasfilm appear to understand the importance of keeping Star Wars alive on the big screen as a significant revenue source.

Recent reports indicate that the projects led by Patty Jenkins for Rogue Squadron and Kevin Feige for a yet-to-be-named feature are no longer in development.

While this news may be disappointing for fans, it could suggest that Lucasfilm has finally settled on a strategic direction for the franchise.

All eyes are now on the Star Wars Celebration event in London, scheduled for April, where the company is expected to reveal its future plans.

Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait too long to learn about the next Star Wars movie.
