Disney Needs To Stream More Adult Content To Be Taken Seriously

With a rather stale fourth quarter, Disney executives are reported to be having a heated debate about having more adult content on their streamer.

Current CEO of Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek, is of the opinion that Disney+ needs to expand and stream its adult-centric properties. This is backed by the claim that it would bring in new subscribers to the platform who weren’t previously interested in Disney’s primarily family-friendly content.

This may ring true, for while Disney+ has amassed over 118.1 million subscribers since its launch two years ago, the rate is clearly slowing down. After its messy Disney+ Day (with leaks and content hidden behind paywalls), the House of Mouse has to pick up the slack.

There’s only so much its classic, Marvel, Star Wars, and Lucasfilm content can shoulder.

However, Disney’s former CEO and current executive, Bob Iger, believes they should stick to their age-old formula. After all, Disney equals traditional and family-friendly content.

While Iger may be treading along the lines of don’t fix what’s not broken, Chapek does have a point — the streamer’s conservative approach may keep them from being a real competition to counterparts like Netflix and Amazon.

Plus, only recently, Disney+ did make Star and its subsidiary 20th Century Fox and ABC content available on a few of its international platforms. Since these did have adult content, Disney+ also added in the parental control feature.

A similar approach can be taken for Disney+ in the USA as well. That way, Disney+ can still uphold its family-friendly banner while allowing its other audience to enjoy mature content if they’d like to. The fact is that Disney does have a lot of adult content that is without a streaming home right now — which the company should totally capitalize on.

Disney has to realize that its younger viewers are not going to stay young forever. As Disney’s target audience begins growing up, they may move to other streamers for their age-appropriate needs.
