Disney to get Wakanda Series by ‘Black Panther’ Director

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is set to develop a TV series set in the futuristic kingdom of Wakanda for streaming giant Disney+.

The new series will be created as part of a five-year television deal between Coogler’s Proximity Media and Walt Disney Co. According to Coogler, “We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.” The deal also includes the option of Coogler writing and directing projects for other parts of the Disney banner and not just Marvel Studios.

He (Coogler) has brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful, and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment… We look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.

Although details are scarce on the new TV series, we know that it is supposed to be set in the futuristic kingdom of Wakanda. Wakanda, superhero Black Panther’s homeland, is a fictional country in sub-Saharan Africa, and has frequently been featured in many films of the Marvel Universe, including Avengers: Age of Ultron, Black Panther, and Captain America: Civil War. It is depicted as the most highly developed nation on the planet.

Meanwhile, Coogler has confirmed that for his current project Black Panther II, he will neither recast another actor as Black Panther in the late actor Chadwick Boseman’s role, nor recreate him using CGI.

The original Black Panther had created history by being the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a predominantly Black cast and a Black director. It had won universal critical and commercial acclaim, and even bagged seven Oscar nominations.

The sequel to Black Panther is slated to release in July 2022.
