Sony Reportedly Acquiring ‘Doctor Who’ Production Company In £60M

There are high chances of Doctor Who season 14 being produced not by Bad Wolf but Sony. RadioTime, via BroadcastNow, reported that Bad Wolf, Doctor Who’s production company, is “on the brink” of being acquired by Sony.

If the reports turn out to be accurate, then Sony would be the majority stakeholder in Bad Wolf. Meanwhile, the production company’s founders Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter will keep their stakes under the new deal.

Sony Pictures acquisition deal is rumored to cost £60 million. This isn’t the first time that Sony has taken an interest in BBC’s Doctor Who.

According to Screenrant, a 2015 leaked email controversy revealed Sony was in discussion with the BBC to produce a movie on Doctor Who.

As Jodie Whittaker, the 13th Doctor, and current director Chris Chibnall take their leave after season 13, the baton has been passed to the veteran showrunner Russell T. Davies season 14 onwards.

If all goes well, Davies’ season 14 and the franchise’s “series beyond” will be produced by Sony alongside BBC, as would have been the case with Bad Wolf.

Bad Wolf, founded back in 2015, is known for its popular shows His Dark Materials and A Discovery of Witches. But the company’s biggest show is the British sci-fi time travel Doctor Who co-produced with BBC.

With a whole new production company handling Doctor Who in the future, there will be some significant changes to the show’s universe.

The Time Lord’s adventures have been in the making since 1963, and it is still going strong 58 years later.

It’s also rumored that Davies’ production for Doctor Who season 14 will start in 2022. Season 14 might be released in 2023, marking the show’s 60th anniversary.

As Whittaker takes her to leave, fans will have to wait a bit more to see who the new Doctor would be.

Meanwhile, they can watch Whittaker’s last adventures as the Doctor on HBO Max starting October 31, 2021.

About Doctor Who

Doctor Who is a British sci-fi TV program produced by the BBC since 1963. The series aired from 1963-89 and was then again revived in 2005.

The program depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called “The Doctor,” an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-traveling spaceship called the TARDIS.  With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, saves civilizations, and helps people in need.

Over the years, many actors like Jodie Whittaker, William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, and Peter Davidson have played the Doctor. Hartnell was the first actor to be cast as Doctor Who.
