Doctor Who Special Trailer Teases Neil Patrick Harris’ Villain

BBC just gifted Doctor Who fans a new trailer for the upcoming 2023 special of the famous sci-fi series. The 60th Anniversary Special was announced in September 2021, and since then, we’ve been ardently waiting for the four-episode event introducing new and old characters.

The new trailer shows the return of David Tenant, this time as the Fourteenth Doctor, and Catherine Tate reprises her role as Donna Noble alongside her longtime co-star. We get glimpses of our new characters, including Yasmine Finney’s Rose Noble, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, and Neil Patrick Harris’ mystery villain.

The trailer didn’t reveal Harris’ villain’s identity, but we have a theory about that. But first, we’d like to tackle a few pieces of information the trailer provided for the 2023 special.

The trailer explains how the upcoming special touches on Donna Noble’s arc from season 4 of the reboot series, where Tenant’s Doctor had to take away her memories to save her from burning up with the Doctor’s memories.

The 2023 special will show the Fourteenth Doctor’s race against time to save Donna from her memories and somehow achieve that without letting him see her since that could trigger her memories and drive her to a fatal end. But he must have found some way to avoid said trigger since they’re back avoiding explosion together in the minute-long trailer.

But let’s come back to Neil Patrick Harris’ mystery villain! The trailer gives the antagonist a new look but doesn’t reveal any hints about his identity. We might be getting a second revival with the Toy Emporium theme, according to our ideas.

The 2022 Doctor Who special detailed David Tenant’s revival as the Fourteenth Doctor after his fatal injury as the Tenth – clearly, this has something to do with Harris’ villain introduction. We think the show’s revived the Celestial Toymaker, with a renewed version, in the upcoming special, and he has an axe to grind with the Time Lord.

After all, Mike Gatiss did hint at the character’s return in an upcoming episode, and we didn’t see him in the 2022 special. We’ll just have to wait to confirm who this mystery villain is till 2023 when the 60th Anniversary Special comes out.
