Does Daphne Have A Baby / Get Pregnant?

Bridgerton’s Season 1 finale resolved the mystery of whether Daphne and Simon succeeded in making a baby or not. After eight whole episodes of will-they-won’t-they, Daphne and Simon managed to get over their million issues and finally made whoopie. No wait, they made several whoopies (one reason for the show’s MA rating) but finally managed one that would get them a baby.

After a prolonged struggle in their married life, Daphne and Simon ended the first season of Bridgerton by welcoming a baby boy. Simon even joked about keeping the family tradition of alphabetically named kids and looked for names starting with the letter A for the newborn.

But didn’t Simon swear to never ‘sire any children’? Also, wasn’t a prince sniffing around Daphne, so what made her choose a duke instead? Whatever happened to that duel-to-death between Simon and Daphne’s brother Anthony?

Yes, Daphne and Simon had a long uphill road before starting a family of their own.

1. Do Simon and Daphne Get Married?

Daphne and Simon get married in a quick ceremony after Anthony catches the couple kissing in a garden.

What started as a mutually beneficial ruse to fake a relationship soon turned into a passionate romance between Daphne and Simon. With Daphne’s big brother Anthony shooing away all of her potential suitors, she needed to look desirable again.

Hanging out with the Duke did the trick for her. As for the Duke, having Daphne by his side kept all the buzzing single ladies and their mamas at bay during his visit to London.

It was a win-win until Daphne and Simon somehow became friends. Their conversations grew longer, and Daphne was able to draw the reclusive Simon out of his rathole. Daphne’s feelings are strong enough to take her away from a Prince’s proposal and drawback to Simon.

Even Simon, despite being adamant about not getting married, cannot fathom how Daphne could make him feel safe and understood.

Lines are crossed, and Anthony catches the two of them kissing. (well, obviously a little more than just kissing.) Seeing Anthony brings Simon to his senses, and he refuses to marry Daphne, much to her surprise.

2. Why Can’t Simon Have Children?

After Anthony confronts Simon and Daphne in the park, kissing, he asks the Duke to marry his sister. But Simon refuses, and the two men agree to settle the matter in a pistol duel, ‘like men’. An exasperated Daphne, who stands to lose either way the duel ends, interrupts them just in time to save both the men.

Sensing that there was no way out of marriage anymore, Simon tells Daphne that he cannot have children, which the poor girl takes literally. Simon is incapable of having children, thinks Daphne.

But she still agrees to marry him, firstly because she still loves him and secondly because they had been seen kissing by one of the women at the party.

They had a rather sad wedding ceremony, given that both of them were not expecting it to happen this way. But to Daphne’s surprise, she finds out that the Duke is quite capable of satisfying her on their wedding night.

What follows is a series of last-second pull-outs, which an innocent Daphne assumes is a part of the Duke’s impotence. You see, she has no idea how babies are made. That is until she finally sits her Lady’s Maid down to understand how exactly a whoopie makes a baby.

3. Did Daphne Force Simon to Have A Baby?

Upon realizing what exactly Simon meant by the whole ‘I can’t have children’ trope, Daphne is infuriated. She decides to take matters in her own hands and gets on top the next time they’re in bed. This time she does not let Simon pull out even though he asks her to stop twice.

When Simon asks her why’d she force his hand, she confronts him about whether he was really impotent or not. Things are clarified a bit more but not enough. Daphne still thinks Simon lied to her because he did not love her and only wanted to use her.

Everything now depends on the fact of whether Daphne gets pregnant or not. The Duke promises to let Daphne go if she didn’t conceive and provide for her if she did but end all intimacy at the same time. She does not get pregnant, not this time.

4. How Does Daphne Get Pregnant?

While Daphne is waiting for her next period to confirm if she was pregnant yet, she snooped around Simon’s past. She discovered his toxic relationship with his father, the former Duke of Hastings. Simon was a stutterer and hated by his father for the same.

When Daphne finally confronts the Duke about the reason not to have children, he reveals the promise made to his father on his deathbed. Daphne is baffled and asks if that was the only way to get back at his father. Duke remains unmoved.

But in a rather simplistic turn of events, the Duke agrees to father children after his aunt, Lady Danbury, convinces him. We can expect future ruptures in Daphne and Simon’s relationship considering it stands on someone else convincing Simon to give it a go rather than deciding for himself.

Regé-Jean Page, the actor playing Simon, even hinted that their marriage would not be without troubles in the future seasons. Speaking to TV Guide,

“I’m not sure I believe in paradise. I know that the romance genre generally does — part of the deal is that you get a happy ending.”

“But as far as continuing to explore characters, I think that love is an evolving thing. It’s a living, breathing thing that needs tending, that needs looking after, that needs mending when it gets worn or torn.”

Hinting at turmoil for the character,

“They get married very young. They still have a lot of growing to do. They have a lot to do, and I think it’ll always be fun to watch them do that together.”

Anyway, Simon was convinced to give the marriage and family way of life ago for the time being. The two finally have consensual intercourse in the last episode before Daphne gets pregnant and even births a baby boy.
